My mixes aren't as loud as I want them to be. I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0. What are some techniques to raise signal without clipping? Compression, limiting, reverb?

Any help would be great!

Compression and limiting helps.

Tossing a limiter on during tracking can help avoid transient peaks.

Adding compression to tracks helps raise their overall level even more.

However, be careful not to squash the life out of your tracks (unless that is what you're going for).

How does compression and limiting increase the signals? Thanks.

Quick peaks in the signal being recorded will cause digital clipping. Thus, the signal must be recorded at a level low enough to keep the peaks from clipping. Limiting reduces the peaks and allows the overal signal level to be increased. Keep in mind to not use excessive limiting which would squash the the entire signal along with the quick peaks.

Compression performs a similar function. While excessive compression can ruin the dynamics of the signal, compression allows the signal to be raised without clipping.

Kinda like the mentioned "automatic fader."
