I'm trying to figure out what to do next to this -- the song's called "Inconsolable", and if I had to put a genre on it, I'd hope to be able to call it "instrumental country"

I'd like to re-arrange with lyrics, but first, I'll need to learn to write lyrics and then learn how to sing, etc. -- in the meantime, I'm picking at it. Any suggestions? Critiques of the mix are very much welcome, too. Thanks!

It doesn't sound like everyone is playing at the same tempo. The song has potential. Definitely get some lyrics on there, and retrack to a click. If you're going to keep it an instrumental, I'd add another part with a more "up front" melody. As is, it sounds like a backing track for a vocal.

I like the slide part, nice.

HTH!

I alternated between "straight" and "funk" drum loops - risky in a country song, I know :) -- I'll definitely reconsider. It's actually pretty tightly to a click track.

I LOVE the way that acoustic sounds. Very clean...almost metallic. The slide is also a very nice touch. Some of the parts sound off timing-wise as mwthompson said.

I think adding some ambient background stuff would add depth to the song without necessarily adding vocals or anything too up front. It depends on your style though I suppose. The song is definitely laid back...just something I could relax to.

OK - I redid the drums, getting rid of the funk syncopation - thanks for that.

Love the slide man. It actually reminds me a little of one of the songs off of "Meddle" by Pink Floyd.

I hear ya bout the singing, I've just started treading that territory myself, and boy is it scary.

Nice tune for sure.

I think this stuff is really nice. The acoustic guitar is lovely and balanced. Very well eq'd if it has been. To me, it is how I like an acoustic to sound..........crisp, slightly metallic yes but enough to bring out the strumming and make it clear and not muddy. The slide is really good too. Have you thought about paying some more attention to those drums?? I'm not particularly fond of the snare, it sounds weak and lacking and I think a better drum mix would benefit the whole song and give it a more together feel. There is always quite a bit you can do to midi drums that can make them stand out, can be time consuming to get them sounding realistic but imo really worth it! Good stuff though, enjoyed it.

I hadn't thought much about it, but I will now -- and thanks for the encouragement!

HUGE compliment, that -- thanks!

I had the acoustic part lying around for a couple of years, but this is the first time I recorded it -- decided to make it for/about my one year old daughter -- the way she gets when Mom's gone (and that's the sound of Mom returning at the very end -- actually happened right at the end of the acoustic track, so I left it :) ) She's 14 months and doing better now (so much more mature), but for a while, she couldn't hear this song without going into this fake weeping fit - pretty funny
