I've been having some trouble getting the guitars to sound super-heavy, yet articulate (meaning you can actually hear the complicated/interesting chords we're using, instead of having them sound like simple power-chords). I'm happy with the drums so far (I messed with the kick a bit, but that's about it) but the guitars are just missing... something.

So far, the guitar on the left is a single performance with two mic's up-close (SM57 & KSM27) through a Framus Dragon with lowish distortion. On the right is the same setup, with a doubled Marshall JCM2000 on low distortion with a bunch of volume.

No bass/vox yet.

I just feel like the guitars are missing something. They just don't have any balls! Did I actually use to LITTLE distortion in my quest for super-articulate guitars? Help! :(

Nice Stuff!!

Dude, they sound pretty good to me. Maybe just a bit thin. Some awesome playing. The drummer is great. Nice and tight as well. Once you get the bas in there it probably will fatten it all up. I listened to track 02. the overall mix level looks a little low to me...but actually it's probably fine for what you have so far, so disregard! Get the rest of it going, can't wait to hear it all!!

Have you tried muting one of the mics on each side just to ensure you're not getting cancellation? Also you can afford to cut pretty savagely below 300 to get some headroom and allow subtle boosts higher up to improve articulation. But until you get the bass on there, you won't know where the boosts & cuts should be. It already sounds pretty good though, great performances.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there aren't any phase issues that I can hear/see in the waveform :/ I'm beginning to think I just don't know how to get good recorded guitar tone!

Help??? :(

You might be judging it harshly. Pin the bass. Raise the vol slightly. If you still don't like it that might be different.

Track 02 sounds rockin'. Nice playing and composition.
