In order of loudness, what should be louder?

Hybridsound - Please don't take offense to the ribbing you've received here. You have to be kinda thick-skinned in here sometime. The question was one of those - "you're asking for it" kind of things here. You will have better luck with these kind of questions in the Newbie forum. Just keep hanging around in here and use your search button to find old posts related to certain topics that you want to know about. I will guarantee that you will gather an immense quantity of knowledge by doing so. And keep asking questions. Once everybody's through hazing you, somebody will eventually answer you with something useful. Go find Blue Bear's web page and read his articles. Some guy named Sonusman has written some amazing stuff here. Find it. Read the long thread posted by Harvey Gerst ( and anything else by Harvey.) There is a lot of info at some place like studiocovers.com ( I may have that wrong - look for it - maybe someone will correct it for me. ) There is more info to be grabbed in here than you can probably ever absorb. Oh, and if you can't take ribbing and merciless slander, do not go to the Dragon Cave. welcome!

I'm ALWAYS the LOUDEST.................................but hey, its my studio.....nyah nyahhh nyahh

and now for the first and probably last semi-serious reply ;) ....

it's a matter of taste, but usually the idea when mixing is that everything is heard at pretty much the same apparent level. that doesn't mean all your faders should be set the same, but it does mean that every element of the mix should be heard distinctly... if you're listening for the bass you'll hear it well, but if you're listening for the crash cymbal you'll hear it just as well. neither appears to be louder but both can be heard clearly.

the most obvious initial answer to your question would probably be "lead vocals," but again that is misleading. our brain/ears are very good at picking out and understanding speech. the lead vocals will probably appear to come out at you the most in most mixes, but not necessarily because it's pumping out more decibels than anything else... just because it fits nicely in the mix, isn't blocked by any other instruments, and is recorded clearly.

my question is, why does this have to be explained to you? just listen to any other song in the world that you consider to be well-mixed and get something similar in terms of levels. or, don't. it's up to you.
