Is there anybody out there that could give me some advice on how I can load my MD8 data directly onto my computer and change the format from ATRAC to .wav?

At the moment I am playing two tracks through the Line In inputs and recording with Cool Edit Pro, sending the tracks to the mixer and then recording the next two tracks and so on - a long and boring task.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated,

regards.

Man, I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your doing it the only cheap way known to md8dom. The, only other way is to buy, or rent an 8 channel A/D converter. With the converter you just plug the direct output into the converter, make sure your converter meters are not clipping and transfer all 8 tracks into the digital input of your sound card, if your sound card has one. Call a pro audio rental place and see what the daily cost is to rent. The typical 8 channel converters run from about $800 to $3000 new.

Peace,

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the promt reply, actually, I'm working my way up to being cheap.

Seriously, the idea was to try to avoid going from Analog to digital twice (microphone - MD8 - MD8 - D/A), but if that's the only way, then I guess I'm stuck with it.

Any tips on converters and sound cards (e.g. the best, the worst and where to look on the net etc) would be appreciated.
Here in Germany prices are high for 'good' home recording equipment and it might be worth paying the extra shipping charges for products from the USofA.

One more point. I originally bought my MD8 for recording live concerts. After setting up for my first concert (the first time I used my MD8) I went off to do the camera work and I left my assistant - not the sharpest knife in the drawer - to monitor the levels. When I came back during the break I discovered that he had managed to loose the last song on each disk as the disks were recording for only 13 minutes. I had told him the disks were good for 18 minutes and he was changing them at the 16-17 minute mark between songs.

Is this normal (the 13 minute thing, not the intelligence of my assistant!).

I am using Sony 140MB disks.

Thanks for any help

regards

John

It all depends on the money. Just about any sound card thats 24bit/96 Khz and has a digitl I/O. They can range from $200 and up. The coolest option would be to get a Digidesign Digi-001. It has 8 analog input, as well as 8 outputs, S/PDIF digital I/O and good preamps. It also comes with sofware for recording, its the best bargain out there because it does more than convert A to D, but D to A with the ability to do 24 track digital recording. Check it out.

No, thats not normal, unless the circuitry is different in Germany but I doubt It. You can email Yamaha's customer support people , they have been helpful to me.

Peace,
Dennis
