Here is an In Flames cover song. the song is from the 1997 Whoracle album. I really tried to do the song as closely to the original that i could. It is really heavy and also fairly melodic. I figured i would post it just to see what people think of the mix, performance and all of that. I am really very happy with it. I don't know if it is loud enough though? I suppose that is more of a preferance. Here is the link...song is Jotun Thanks in advance to for any comments.

This is what I've been looking forward to on these boards; good melodic metal. In Flames will always be one of my favorite bands. This hit the sweet spot. Guitars are nice and thick, I like em a lot. Great playing too. Are the drums tracked or looped?

nice job! my buddy turned me on to these guys a few months ago.. the guitars are a bit too loud imop because they weaken the drums.. the guitars sound great except theres a bit of a mid bass woof to them that happens every so often.. perhaps some type of roll off somewhere is needed.. maybe some reverb on the drums.. I heard a few clams like @1:13 and a few others.. pretty phat though! I don't think I heard a bass guitar..

Hey thanks for listening.

Fatt...Thanks for listening. yeah, i am kinda getting back to my metal roots. For awhile i was getting stuck into the NU-er metal. But recently i have pulled my head out of my ass and rediscovered what i want to do, and not what is popular. Although some NU stuff is good. Melodic metal rules! Yeah the drums are real, i don't use loops or a drum machine. I haven't been drumming that long so i am pretty happy with my progress as a drummer.

Sabbath...Thanks for the listen. yeah it's not perfect but when i retrack it for real it will be. I originally had the drums up louder but upon really listening to the original more and more i noticed that the drums were buried a bit more, and the guitars dominated. The mid woof you mentioned might be the bass(yeah it's in there) It is not really very prominent except for a few accented notes. And they sound kinda woofy. I will more than likely retrack the rythym guits and bass. maybe raise up the bass drums a bit. In Flames is one of my favorite bands. Thier last 3 albums are brilliant, Colony. Clayman, Reroute To Remain.

glad to hear some true metal

This is one of my fav In flames songs. When i saw the title "In Flames cover" i was hoping it was going to be jotun.
Everything sounds pretty dead on. The drums are a little buried as addressed before. One of the lead guitars sounds slightly out of tune in places.
Really good cover man. This is prob my fav thing that you've posted.

A little low-mid heavy on guitars... not bad.

Reminds me of CrankyOne's drum adventures :D

Don't really like that "echo reverb" thing on the guitars... would like 'em just a bit drier (pref...)

Drums a bit louder/gtrs down a bit. Bass definition & level. Agree with Sam....

WISC & Cranky need to hear this.

Cool vocals. Nice perf. Thumbs up

Thanks for the listen

Wireneck...glad you liked it, I have to retrack a couple of guitars on there. Man the third underlying harmony and rythym progression is a bitch to pull off properly...most people don't know it is there on the album but there is some tricky wierdness underneath the main guitar. I remember you said you loved In Flames. After i fix this i am probably going to do another cover of In Flames cause there guitar work is so fun to play. Thanks again.

Participant...Thanks for the listen, when i repost i will boost drums, and lower guits. Maybe bring the bass guitar up a tad, and also. Probably cut a little low mids as well cause people are talking about the low mids being a bit harsh. Hope you guys check it out when i remix and post to let me know if i progressed or regressed. Thanks again

I`m not that much of a metal fan but damn, you do this well. It sounded a bit midscooped at the beginning and then filled out quickly. I didnt hear the kick and bass like I like but those guitars were really happening man.. the last part of the tune just before the end jus kept on gettin up!!

What Toki said man...........
Mids are scooped....
a bit of stereophonic havoc on my monitors...bass is too loud...vox is too low....when the bass comes in it creates a weird warble effect.....
Guits are warm and fat for sure....
worth working on...I never heard the tune before myself..
hard to compare....ya know?
Joe

Thanks Joro, i am not really sure what you mean about the warble effect. I am gonna retrack the bass but i don't want to make the same mistake as the first time. thanks for the listen.

Analytical Man, how did you record the drums? (drumset, # of mics, positioning of mics.) I like the tone of them, there are probably a few things I would have done differently though. I think in the context of the mix, they sound too plain.

Add some low-bass to the kick & bass guitar, bring the vocal & cymbals up a few db's, and this will be smokin' dude.

Good job dude. Did you just use a pod for the guitars? If it were me I would raise the guitars a hint around 4k, but I have unconventional taste so take that with a grain of salt. I see no real problems with the mix. Well played too. Nice work man.

Hey man,
...cool tune. Im unfamiliar w/ the band, but this is nice. I didnt read mention below anywhere about the vocals being too far back. It very well could be my listening source (comp), but i can hardly hear them here at all. The mid scoop comments below sound on the money too. Nice tune man.

Thanks alot everyone. Wow, this is the first song that i got a 5 star on. Cool! You all have been very helpful in making this sound good. Thanks.

Guernica...Thanks for listening, And in reguard to the vox being to low, they are even lower on the actual recording by In Flames, and i was trying to go for that sound. Mainly lower in the beginning talking sections.

Fatt...The drums are my Tama Rockstar with Sabian pro cymbals. mic'd each tom, and overheads, and triggered the snare/bass from the DM5 module.

Toki...thanks

Linchpin...i'll try the boost, thanks for listening

M. Brane, thaknksAgree that the low bass should be a bit louder

Jeezz,

man hard hitting shit pardner..

These production techniques are fillin the spectrum really sounds like the guits are huuuuuge.. I am getting that same distortion in the mid bass that Sam mentioned, what did he call it a "mid-bass woof"? Yeah that would best describe it.

It reminds me of when i was younger and would listen to Metallica on my clock radio at full volume I would get that same kind of effect.

Great sound to this, great choice of tunes too.

Dude, you are my new hero. :D
This is damned kickin', and sounds quite accurate to In Flames. Props forever man!
