In-ears or normal headphones for the drummer?

Which would be better for a drummer recording in the studio?

That is strictly a matter of personal preference of the drummer on a session...

There are no steadfast rules with regard to this topic...

of course there are no rules. Drummers that hit hard though are constantly telling me to turn up my expensive headphones, and i've blown the drivers in them. So I switched over to using inears for the drummer. They isolate the drums more and they will get very loud without distorting.

drummers love them...at least experienced drummers do.
