Impules.. how do i use them?

so last night it was the first time i heard about impulses...I learned how to use impulses on a completely un-distorted guitar but how do i use it with my pod farm? I mean, how would i go about recording my guitar with pod farm, and then adding an impulse to it? when i recorded just a clean guitar, it didn't work D:. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.
 
What's the difference between reverbs and impulses? Or are they the same?

An impulse can be a reverb, but not necassarrilly. You can have a "Marshall 4X12" impulse. Or a "Mesa Boogie miced off-axis with an SM57" impulse", etc....
 
also, i should add. Is it possible to change a distorted guitar tone with an impulse, and get decent results?
