Can any of the roland hd recorders import (load) & export (save) SD2, aiff, and wav files? I' ve got a buddy getting ready to purchase a roland vs840, but we can't seem to find info as to whether file imports & exports can be performed with the 840. I will be doing his mixes & mastering at my studio on a Mac using Motu Digital Perfromer. So, he'll need to have a machine that can import (load from CD) & export (save to CD) SD2, aiff, and wav files. Do the 840's come with built in CD recorders? Are the 840'3 24bit converters?

Thanks in advance

The 890 has 24 bit converters. The 880EX has 20 bit. Any before that has less than 20...like 18 or 16...not sure which. None of the 8's come with built in burners.

Gracious,

DO they have scsi ports for an external burner? And, would the 840's be able to backup & import files as sd2, aiff, or wav?

thanks again

I'm shopping and it's my main beef with Roland - it's a closed system. The 1824CD looks and sounds like pure magic - until you try to think outside the box a little. There seems to be very little interconnectivity, even with older Roland products.

I'm looking right now at a Korg D1200, mainly because it records at 24 bit, has a CD burner, 40 gig drive, and a USB port. It's an open architecutre design and runs about a thousand bucks. Only four inputs, though.

There's a lot of Roland information at www.vsplanet.com . Here's a link to one of the 840 threads.

The biggest beef I see over there, other than stuff related to the generally nonintuitive design of the VS series, is the interconnectivity problem. The flip side is that people rave about the sound.

Thanks very much for the infos. I'll check those links.

I have the EX and I use the spdif connections for copying to computer. There's a scsi connection for CD but it has to be Roland or Plextor.

Tell me more?

Hi Monty,
tell me more here. you're scsi connected to the computer eh? Are you using the computer to edit audio from the EX? Or, are you just scsi'ed so you can back up data from the EX to a hd on your computer. if you're editing audio from the EX on the computer, what software are you using.

If you can picture my scenario here; the bud that's looking to buy an 840 and I are in two different states. I'll be doing his mixes & masters (on a mac in DP). so if he's bouncing tracks (saving) from a 840 to a CD-ROM, i'll need to be able to import his files to the mac, perform edits/corrections, and possibly send files back to him to either add/correct parts. So, his sessions on the 840 and my sessions on the mac/DP would need to be sample accurate time locks according to the bpm of each song. Does that make sense? and this is what I'm trying to find out if we can accomplish this? or, instead of mailing CD-ROM's back & forth, perhaps we could email the files to each other?

There's a scsi connection for CD but it has to be Roland or Plextor.
so am I understanding correct, a 840 can import & export SD2, aiff, wav, or audio via the scsi port/cd-rom (burner-Roland or Plextor)?????? . if this is the case (import & export SD2, aiff, wav, or audio) on an 840, then we're getting closer.

Man thanks a bazillion

I believe the 840 can do some of those transfer things. After the 840, Roland got shitty with their transfer functions. I think they were afraid people might become too familiar with computer recording. Anyway, I’m not sure what all can be done with the scsi connectors on the 840 other than burning songs to CD and backing up to CD and zip drives. I’ve never used the scsi function. I do use the digital copy feature through the spdif connections on my 880EX. It’s not a transfer, but a copy, and it sounds very good. You should go to the VSPlanet site and dig around.

What you want to do can ONLY be done on a 2480, and it can ONLY be done with a 2480.
