posted this cover of tommy Emmanuel's acoustic guitar cover of lennon's imagine a week or so ago. i've been working on a strings section using synful orchestra and finished tonight. it should be up on the myspace by now, may take a little bit though i don't know how long myspace takes to show up.

i found it quite challenging to mix. however, this is working with very low quality gear (well, no gear really). low quality guitar track and fake strings. very hard to place indeed.

Listening.........

Guitar is too wet. Sounds good though.

Nice first attempt with the strings. They are very difficult to write for and it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to know what works, so keep it up. Listen to more string arrangements to give you ideas. The chord at the end was...... well I wont ruin it for others.... :D

Very nice, very pleasant arrangement.

thanks.

thanks dave. anyone else got any thoughts?

Strings sound really good....the programming/writing is effective... Adds a lot to an already excellent bit of guitar playing....

I thought that the strings took a bit long to come in and the break in the middle where they stopped left a gap in the feel. But that's just a personal preference....so take it with a large grain of salt. That big strum in the beginning was a bit loud....but not so much so in the ending.....

Overall great job......

Not bad. Too much violin, not enough cello/bass to back it up. My director tells us to think of a triangle when it comes to velocity. The low end should play much louder relative to the high end. This is because the higher instruments are a lot easier to hear, so you don't need as much to get the point across. However, bass is very difficult to cut through, so you need more for it to be heard in conjunction with the high end. The end result is a much warmer, fuller sound.

i agree

the cello was the hardest to make come through. i found it was the most similar in frequency as the guitar track, which is what i think made it difficult to find a sweet spot for it.

i like to think ive got a pretty good grasp on theory, chords, harmony, etc. i really enjoyed arranging strings. i think i may try a full orchestra original piece as soon as i get a decent keyboard controller for midi programming.

im thinking of making another render/mix tomorrow with a much dryer guitar sound and seeing if its any easier to mix the strings.

thank you very much for the compliments.

New mix

New updated mix on my myspace. less strings, waves mastering plug ins (demo). think the waves did a HUGE improvment. which i could afford to keep it. :(

I think you made a good call scaling back the strings. I know I'm tempted to put them into everything now, but you have to resist! Good arrangement.

I like your arrangement on the guitar. I remember the first version you had of this. Strings sound great in the background. I'm gonna give it another listen later on when I can turn the volume up a little more.

Yeah...DavidK is the authority on string sections. I would offer a brief suggestion...the violin that you have is too repetitive and should be reinforced w/ lower strings. Mixed a bit less forward.. When adding the other string parts, try to space them out so that the Basses are 2 octaves or so below top line. Next part down from a sixth to an octave + a third, same with the next lowest. A typical chord might look like this:

1 (violins)

3 (2nd violins)

5 (cello)

1 (basses)
with 2 octaves between violins and basses

movement within the chord is good.

There is way more than this to know about string writing. I hope DavidK will offer more in depth info.
