Its a Stroh Guitar:

It works like a phonograph. A thin rod transmits vibrations from the bridge to the centre of a thin mica or aluminium membrane, which is then amplified by the horn.

I'm thinking of turning the 'reproducer' (the thin metal disc that holds the membrane) out of walnut, and fashioning the horn from sheet copper.

in antwerp where i live there are lots of eastern european street artists that play the violin version of this. they produce a very distinct mid-heavy almost megaphone like sound. they squeak too.

they are the dreaded horn-violins of antwerp. they make people want to cross the street or even turn back.

I'd be delighted to. I'm not sure whether to use the traditional membrane, or else use stretched goatskin (like an old-school banjo), but I'll figure something out.

It's funny that you mention Antwerp, because I saw the violin version for the first time on the streets of Brugges, Belgium, and I was intrigued.
