I'm thick headed tonight.....please help me.

Ok, I've got several instrument sources (samplers, sound modules, etc.)

Mix A: Basically a live sound coming from all of my sound souces, routed through my digital mixer to the computer.

Mix B: Each track recorded to audio and then mixed accordingly using a virtual mixer.

Why does mix B sound so incredibly better!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh!!!
 
Which virtual mixer and which digital mixer are you using?
 
So mix A is MIDI controlled and B is recorded to hard disk?

Try to completely zero each mix and compare the diffrence. Make sure to document or save your old mixes.
 
Here's some more info, sorry about being vauge....

I run ALL of my sound sources first to my mixer which is a Spirit M12. It has a SMPT out which I run to my main audio/seq computer (via SMPT) which runs Cakewalk ProAudio 9.

Up until recently I was pretty much recording just one stereo mix for the main instruments and then adding additional tracks for vocals. But then I started solo'ing each midi track and creating individual audio tracks for each instrument.

One thing lead to another and I have about 40 tracks. snare,bass,toms,cymbals,hihats, guitars, pads, strings, fx,etc,etc,etc.

I then started mixing all of the audio sources in Cakewalk. It was a time consuming process, but the end result is really alot different than just recording the instruments "live" straight to one stereo track.

So, to rewind a bit...

Mix A is 1 stereo audio track of the music mix as it sounds for lack of a better term "live" coming from my sound modules.

Mix B is a ton of individual audio tracks mixed together.

Mix B sounds better. :)
 
Mix B is an actual mix and Mix A is sorta 'live to tape' without all the fine tuning. I don't understand why are you surprised that a fine tuned mix would be better.
 
Hi TexRoadkill,

Obviously I have alot to learn, but the difference in sonic quality is amazing. At less volume levels, the B mix sounds wider, fatter, louder. I'm wondering if my Spirit M12 board is doing somthing weird when alot of sound is going through the board. Because the difference is major.
