i'm right smack in the middle of one...kind of an "over the hills-far away" thing....

Nice acoustic sound in the intro.

Really great guitar playing!
I like the differant sounding electric guitars.
They blend well.

Kit sounds fine for this mix,I'd stick with it.

Good stuff!

Best to you,
Pete

I REALLY APPRECIATE THE RESPONSES!

MKG-
glad you liked it..... spent some time this weekend, tracking the new leads, some more acoustic, just can't decide how to mix it....... yeah, it debuted on the planet....

twist-
don't cut them fingers off man, hard to pick your nose with a stub............ LOL
so you don't mind that modeler, huh? to me, it just feels downright strange... but i had to try it just to see if i could get something out of it. i suppose i could get used to it if i used it all the time, but it doesn't feel very natural.

tripleM-
i've thought about doing this as an instrumental version, but the arrangement and openness of it begs for a vocal...... thanks for listening.....

scott tansley-
well, thanks for the compliment. i do consider this "shred" issue, but in the end, i do hear the melody, and the notes are just a way to get from one "color" of the melody to the next...
i'd love to borrow the drummer! i've had a stack before, that's why i have permanent ear damage! a vox would be so sweet, you've got the right idea for that tone i hear.....so you think the hi hats should stay, huh? i'll have to play around with that idea, maybe bring it in halfway through..... i gotta get the vocals on it first, then bring the hihat in and see what happens....... thanks for the idea......

Fed-
yeah, i get tired of it quick too! LOL ......... the vocal does break up the monotony of just the riff by itself, there's harmony and straight lines going on, which adds enough to mix it up even during the repetitive stuff...... bass line is my biggest bitch. i've spent so much time eq'ing what i've got, and really, ultimately, it's the cheap ass bass i'm using, you can't polish a turd, which is exactly what i'm trying to do..................;)

mixmkr-
you're absolutely right about it being hard to comment on unfinished stuff....... and normally i don't post until at least the whole arrangement is done.... but i was feeling open to suggestion on this one, probably comes from my not getting to work with other musicians for a while now........
i hope you'll get a chance to review it when i re-post it....... the vocals should bring it into focus.......

lt. bob-
glad you like the music part........ i'll repost soon, and i hope the vocals will not let you down..... the usually let ME down........... ;)

muzeman-
great comment on the kit, i'm real torn about running it bone dry, or putting some ambient reverb on it........ i've got to apply reverb to the whole kit if i do it, it's a single stereo pair...... which makes it tough on the kick and cymbals....... do you think a bonham approach would be too much for this kind of mix..... make it too muddy.......? as it is now, i've got a tiny amount of room on it, about 12 meter room, mixed about 1.2 seconds, and real light on the send....

Gonzo,

Do you teach guitar lessons? We need to hook up sometime dude. What kind of acoustic is that? Is that the taylor you were talking about getting awhile back. Dude your increadable.

Guitardaze
Rich
whatever

By the way how are you micing your acoustic, Etc? I really like the sound you got on that intro.

Rich

HEY, You guys are still listening?!!

jcmm-
thanks for tuning in..... i'm pulling my hair out now, mixing...... got new monitors, and i don't know them for shit! hope the 2nd version comes out as well.......

Telefunken-
gdaze!
sure i'll teach....... but i won't make any sense! i doubt i'd be a very good teach........ i was always the one in back of the class drawing pictures of guitars, and never knew what the teach was talking about.......... LOL

that is the taylor......... it's a 414...... those are light 10 gauge on the guitar, it really sounds better with the 11's.......

the acoustics are miced......... an audio tecnica 4033 through an audio buddy pre, then into a little dbx compressor, then into the vs880ex...........
i just sit as close to the mic as i can without hitting it....... or slobbering on it.......

Hmmm, how should I put this:

Well, it's really nice to hear someone play (electric) guitar, and not feel like it has to be 3-1/2 minutes of overdriven, over distorted barr chords! This is really good, you have obviously worked hard at honing your craft, and paying your dues in the practice room. It's refreshing to hear that dedication come out in your music.

The arrpeggio's/fills are right on! The second electric picks up and comes in very nicely. The instrumental hook seems appropriate, and keeps the listener.... focused (for lack of a better word.)

The song does, as you say, "beg for a vocal". I'd like to hear that when its done.

Great Job!

very nice! everything sounds great to me guitarwise. needs drums and vocals imo.

Very nice....

Wierd imaging on the intro.... it was too wide, then within the first few seconds it seemed you panned inwards and it drew out the ambience much more effectively............

While the song itself is cool, sonically I heard issues the minute the acoustic intro was over.................

The intro is clear and clean and I was ready for more of the same as the song progressed, unfortunately when the harder part kicked in the clarity and clean sound was lost -- due largely to the less-than adequate drum sound.... you NEED to re-cut the drums with a live drummer!

The guitars are well-balanced, the bass is somewhat poorly defined, but the drums really cry for change!

Good effort.... would really shine with the changes I mentioned!

Great performances BTW - nice and tight.........!

THANKS for chiming in, people....... I've been working on it.....

Michael Jones-
thanks for the thoughts on the arpeggios...... they really are just a way to break up the vocal parts (which of course you can't hear yet.......)

erichenryus-
guitars are so easy for me. having to burdened with a drum machine, a cheap one at that, is the bane of my existinence.........

.........and with that thought, on to........

blue bear-
your bear really is blue!

yeah, the opening imaging just might be me simply changing my mind as i started mixing.... i ride the faders by hand, even though my little machine is set up for automation.... and i agree with you, the panning is better closer to center than the start pan situation.....

drums. like i said , the bane of my existence.........

i am a drummer at heart......... if i could walk and chew gum at the same time, i probably would lay down my axe.......... LOL

unfortunately, i'm poor in wallet, and am tied to my crummy drum machine as a penance for my lack of want of material wealth...... my kingdom for a drummer that could easily find the power and the pocket.......

so my punishment for my lack of funds, is trying to find a kit on my zoom 123 with a sound that's somewhat close to what i really want, and then tweak with my little 3 band parametric eq's as close to a punchy sound as i can get.

i know good drum sounds. i know rhythm. i know what i want......
and in lieu of a real drummer with a killer technique and tone, i think i'll end up using a pc and a decent soundcard and program to do my future drum parts........

oh, the sadness in old school..... i could just punch the "record" button and point to the drummer and say "you're on!".........

you're so right, blue bear, only, i'm stuck with what i got. Or in this case, what i don't got..... ;)

i'll do what i can to remedy the crummy drum tracks to some level of acceptability.........
i may try mastering the drums seperately, with 3 levels of compression, and 4 levels of eq...... i might can get the punch out of the kick without the mud, get some clarity out of the snare without making it sound boxy, and get some air out of the cymbals without making them sound to "sharp"............
:(
i'd love someone to send me a disc with the drum parts only, and then i'd just download that as my rhythm tracks, and re-track everything else! i could do all that in one evening........
'cept the vocals!
i have to wait for God to say "oh, he's suffered enough, let's give him a half assed voice for about an hour and a half" - to pull that off................
LOL:D

dude

for some reason your thread didn't bump... Here ya go. BTW any new versions of "take it all" would be gracefully listened to :D

Great stuff! I'd slap a bunch of room ambience on those drums and take a pinch of 2k out on the electrics. Other than that, its workin' man! Nice acoustic at the top too!

I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP, PEOPLE OF REC LAND.......

PARTICIPANT-
glad your participating.......
i've got vocals tracked now, even though i don't like em, but i'll master it tonight, hopefully post it tomorrow........

crawdad-
thanks for checking it out. room ambience, eh? actually, i do have some "ambient" setting reverb on the drums now, it's just barely there......... i thought when i tried a heavier reverb setting, it muddied it up a bit. But i'm going to re-think that, and try it tonight..... i'm starting from scratch on the mix...........
i'm going to premaster the drums, and the bass, to try to get a little more oomph out of them, rather than shitcanning them..................... i'll focus on that 2k as well...............
