Hey guys, I'm still fairly new to home recording but I do know I'm ready for a better quality of sound. Right now I run Cubase VST 5 & Sonar 5; however, I've got a fairly crappy Emu 0404 card and I'm using a Behringer 1202 Eurotrack mixer. With the pre's on the mixer, I'm barely able to get a recording that's half as loud as it should be.

Long-story-short. I'm looking for a decent interface that won't break the bank or an interface / mixer combination.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, NBFfan

What are you recording? Get the presonus firebox or firepod.

How do you have everything hooked up and what mics are you using.
You should be able to get a decent recording with that setup.

So far the my sound is pretty decent. I've had to work like rip on mic placement and amp settings. However, my room is not too sound friendly. If I stay with the current setup, I will definately need better pre's than what Behringer has to offer. I just thought while I'm ditching the mixer I might as well get a solid interface.......paid too much for the software to settle on bottom line soundcard. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Forgot to list my setup.

4 SM57's
1 SM58
Marshall CD100
JCM 900
Peavey Musician (for my bass)
Pearl Export
Yamaha DJX keys

Cubase VST5
Sonar 5 Producer
Emu 0404 card
Behringer 1202 Eurotrack

I would work on your room (s) first. What good are better pre's in the same crappy room? You say that you can't get your recordings loud enough? You can blame alot of things on behringer but not that one. :D That sounds like a mixing issue.

I think you should sound treat your room first and foremost to get a good sound before you even think of recording it. After that look at getting some decent a/d-d/a converters and make sure you are tracking in 24 bit at around -16dBFS. It's not the pre's in the Behringer that is keeping your recording from being loud. It's most likely the word length and the tracking and mixing levels you are using.

Absolutely. I can debate this, that and the other about mics, preamps, soundcards, etc, etc, etc.

But there is no debate around getting your room sorted out before you spend a bunch of money on gear.

Good luck!

What does this mean? Unless your mixer is actually broken, and somehow you can't turn the gain up, then your pre's have an extremely insignificant effect on how loud something gets. Not to mention there are faders you can turn up in the event that your preamps aren't amplifying enough, not to mention you are recording digitally so you can turn up the faders in your software.
