Hey guys I'm new here looking for some advice. I'm interested in setting up a little computer recording station, nothing too big and fancy, I just don't know what all I'll need. I'm thinking about getting this mic for starters, MXL-MXL-990-Condenser-Microphone-with-Shockmount, until I figure out if I'm any good at this. Will I need an audio interface? I was thinking about getting the M-Audio Pro Tools Recording Studio software that comes with an interface.

Hey,

I think that's a good way to start. There is a recording package that gives you pretty much everything you need to get started and is comprised of most of the things you listed already plus monitors which are important too.

older version (cheaper)
Buy Digidesign Pro Tools Mbox Mini Package | Studio & Recording Packages | Computer Music Packages | Musician's Friend

or the newer version (a better package)
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Avid-ProTools-Mbox-3Mini-Package?sku=431054

You'll have the tools to start creating music, then it's gonna be a matter of reading as much as you can to figure it all out.

Good luck

Yer basic set up is Microphone -> Interface - > Software

Make sure your interface has phantom power and find software that is easy to use if you're a newbie, and for which you can get adequate support. Reaper is used by a lot of people hereabouts.

Whether any particular piece of equipment, such as a mic, is a good choice for you or not, depends upon what you're doing... a topic on which you've left us blissfully ignorant...

Read lots, there are several threads a day asking similar questions to yours.

Welcome to HR..

Thank you ryguy, i'll certainly look into those!

I'm sorry I completely forgot to mention what I was going to be using this for. I just want to try my hand at singing/songwriting/covers.

Well that's different ~ bust my buttons!, why didn't you say so? .....

Armistice tell him the secret.

The secret might be that eclipsechick08 could well be.... a chick...

Do you play a particular instrument that you are hoping to record, as well as your voice - would the next logical question...

Hey, am I on overtime rates for all this extra probing?

Armistice is too slow . . . I'll beat him to the punch . . . but he's said it all already.

The basic set up is mike > interface > software.

Having an interface is important. Which one you get doesn't matter that much, so long as it is likely to satisfy immediate and most common needs: mike inputs, instrument inputs & phantom power.

By all means get ProTools if that's what excites you. Just have a look at alternatives before you buy.

If quality doesn't really matter and you just want to get something down and not multitrack or anything. Get a webcam / camcorder and extract the audio from it. If quality does matter get a mic that works with a camcorder with mic inputs. If AUDIO matters, then by all means get a mic -> interface -> computer+software. Options vary depending on budget. You can spend hundred(s) or thousand(s) or even hundreds of thousands.

What category do you envision for your path? And how much are you willing to spend? Mine involves a field recorder for on location event recording. And a camcorder, a necessary evil these days. But I started down other paths to here from there. To include the typical mic -> interface -> computer+software aka DAW. It really depends on what you "need", you don't need high quality to jot down ideals. But it doesn't hurt, especially if you want to sell those ideals for profit.
