OK...I wanna do recording on my PC, but I don't know jack about it. I read your posts and you are talking all this stuff I don't understand. Please help me out.

Paul,

Your question is wa-a-a-ay too general. It's a little like going to a college professor's office hours and saying, "well, I don't know anything about this subject, so can you explain it all to me?" Nobody can do that; they can only answer specific questions.

If you truly "don't know jack about it," you have to learn some jack first. Then you can ask specific questions and reasonably expect a helpful answer from somebody.

So -- like everyone else did at first -- read up on it. This site has some getting-started articles on it such as

https://homerecording.com/newbies.html

And here's a few others:

A good book that covers the basics is Digital Home Recording, edited by Carolyn Keating, published by Miller Freeman.

Or find a patient friend who can show you the ropes.

Great! And welcome to the wonderful universe of home recording -- like any other universe, there's pain, beauty, and vast landscapes to be explored... have fun!

Thanks, I read the newbie article and I learned a ton. Thanks a lot!!

let's start with equipments...

As someone who's now... somewhat intermediate in computer recordings... or ... maybe still in the beginning...
I was asking questions kinda like yours... though i did know somewhat more than you did. =)

But by all means, I want to be of help.
First, equipment wise...
You have a pc.. obviously... what are the specs?
Usually... ram of over 32meg... 64better... pent 2 or higher... should have no problem...

As for soundcards, I completely recommend Soundblaster Live! series... I own a SB live! Platinum, which is by far the best beauty in the soundcard arena right now...
It's a bit costly, but not really... paying around $200...
It's got front mounting bay... so so much more conveinient. (to connect midi DIN cables (5pin stuff connecting synthesizer to cpu) , headphone jack, mic jack... etc)
And to use soundcard w/o soundfont would be a fool's act...
luckily we got loads of soundfont available to us for free, on http://www.hammersound.com . I downloaded quite a lot... and a lot of them are good.

And what kind of music are you going to do?
Are you gonna play instrument into cpu? or what?
I am a pianist and a musician... i record all different instruments using my keyboard... very efficient... since i do not have to place a note by note by mouse clicks... thas a pain.. but still doable with "copy+paste" option available in any multitrack recording programs such as cakewalk pro audio.

Ask me if you have more questions... on basic starting stuff, I can be of help.

have fun sail!

Before you go out and buy any of the SB family of cards you my want to checksee if your pc has a card built in it. I've owned a few of the SB cards and they are good for a recording greenhorn - but ultimately all I used 'em for was the midi connect. Nowadays alot of PCs are equipped with the midi jack right from the get-go. If you already have one - use it. This will free up slot space and allow you to look into the purchase of a better quality card such as Darla or Gadgetlabs.

Sound Blaster Live! notes

As bball jones notes, the SB Live is OK, certainly very good for the price, and as purplepassion says, the Sound Font capability is very much worth having, but as a recording interface it's only passable compared to ones like bball jones mentions. I have an SB Live, and I use it for its MIDI synthesizer, as I don't own any outboard MIDI devices. The Sound Font capability gives me enormous flexibility. But for recording audio I use my M Audio Delta 66.

You'll find some people on this board that absolutely hate this product, others that love it.

Two interesting articles on the SB Live are at the ProRec website:
