I want to start a studio at my house through the computer and the type music I'm going to perform is rap. What exactly do I need for the computer to be a studio. I want to spend $1200 at the most on it. Please let me know everything I need for a studio on the computer. Please specific on everything thank you very much for you guys help. I have a closet that I can make as a booth for the microphone.

oh that's easy, you just need to buy a rap computer.

kidding. what software you're looking to run might affect what type of system you should buy. need more info here man.

Umm you're gonna need a sequencer and an interface at least; an interface is the software program you need, the interface is the hardware that acts as a go-between you and your computer. Theres alot of variety with both in terms of price and specifications. You'll also need some kind of monitors to hear your sound being played back. And if you're doing rap, you might wanna think about a midi controller and some good samples.....I'm thinking Reason as a sequencer, any decent mic to get you going, even a dynamic, with some type of filter. Maybe an external compression unit if you wanna keep the vocals even. I don't know alot about rap, but I havn't heard of any rap artists with a penchant for strumming acoustic; you're at an advantage in that you most likely won't need huge amounts of gear to capture an audio sound. That means you'll have more money to put into a good software program and some top notch plug ins. This mightn't help, its just opinion and overview. Supply the guys with some pc spec (for info, press the start key, go to run and type 'dxdiag') and they'll be able to help ya.

In general, closets make shitty vocal booths.

I tried to find a retail link to one of these but it seems they're not actually on the market yet...

Supposedly they're going for around $400 which seems like a lot until you add up what it would cost you to truly button down a closet --- and as I said before, you might not get the results you are looking for.

I recommend you try the Tracktion demo version. It doesn't matter if you platform is Mac or PC because Tracktion is cross-platform. If you decide you like it, it's only $150.

I recommend this microphone and this interface.

Then you can download all the free VSTfx and VSTi's here and the web is FULL of free samples - Google is your gateway to those.

Summary:

Reflexion Filter - $400
Tracktion software - $150
Microphone - $100
Interface - $300
Plugins - Free
Samples - Free

Grand total $950

Real basic query, dont wanna hijack this dudes thread, but is firewire just faster than a USB? Or what? As for the reflexion...i made my own gobos, workign well for me and came to 50 bills for 72 sq feet of padding. Theyre on hinges.
