Welcome to the board!

Are you talking about recording the lead vocal 3 times or a lead and two backing vocals?

I record the lead vocal twice. Backing vocals depends on the song, but normally I will record at least two harmonies. In all, I am talking about 6 tracks for vocals (sometimes it can get as high as 10).
The lead vocal I pan down the center, and also depending on the song, I may pan the backing harmonies hard right and left. For a fuller sound, I will record a 3rd set of harmonies and leave them centered.

Are you using any sort of software now, or just recording to a multitracker?

Most of the recording software out there has some sort of compression plugin that will give you decent results. A better (although more expensive) way to go is with an outboard compression unit.

Give me some idea as to what you are doing and I can answer your questions for you.

aiight ok for example i'm a rapper , and i use cool edit , and i have the compressor file but like what do that do ? it just make my waves bigger , u know , and harmonies what is that ? , and i did that and it sounds better then what i would do on the regular
, and another question so how many tracks i use for a singer ? cuz i got this chick that sing u know do i use 3 tracks too and the back ups are the adlips i dont think singers use that alot like the rappers so jeah hit me back and thanks for the help man

Simply put, what a compressor does is to turn down the loudest parts of a given signal, thus reducing it’s dynamic range. Once you’ve squashed the loud peaks, you’re then able to increase the volume of the entire signal. As a result, not only are the loud parts softer, but the soft parts are now louder. However, you must be careful not to over compress, or you could reduce your track to a thin imitation of its former self. It all depends on how you set the controls.

as for harmonies, you usually wont use those with rap vocals. When you harmonize a vocal, you are singing the same part, but with different tones, that still sound good with original track.
