I'm lucky enough to work at a Gas Refinery where we have an industrial insulation company on site.

So far I have aquired a few sheets of rigid fiberglass 2'' thick.

They also have a roll of sonomatt foam (the egg carton shape) that is approx 1" thick that has a backing of lead impregnated vinyl approx 2mm or 5/64" thick which has a silver foil backing on that which can be peeled off. The vinyl backing is very flexible.

The question I have with this is:

Could I use this in any way or form in making absorption panels? eg :Make a framework with the rigid fiberglass 2" thick, then instead of covering with cloth put a layer of this vinyl backed foam over the top. Obviously it will have some reflection off the vinyl backing, but maybe as a broadband absorber of sought?

Next: They also have rockwool/rigid fiberglass approx 3" thick that they use to wrap around pipework that is in two halves. There is a variety of sizes. One particular size has a diameter of approx 8"-10".

The question:

Could these be used as Bass traps in the corners of my room, I know they won't be as wide as your average Bass trap, but put in the corners they would look like pillars?

I have read Ethan Winers material a dozen times over as well as the associated forums regarding acoustic treatment and the more I read the more I am learning, but then something comes along or I read something else and I get a little confused. I have a small room L12' x W8'1" x H8'4", so I know I need the corners to be treated for Bass, and my early reflection points such as the ceiling and behind and at the sides of my monitors and the rear and front walls with absorption panels.

If anyone could give me some feedback on the two products I described above and the possibilities of these being at all useful to me and the treatment of my room would be appreciated. :)

Thanx in advance

The lead impregnated vinyl backing will be too heavy to allow anything behind it (including airspace) to be effective at much of anything. If you have a place where you could use it for reflection points, it might be OK there as simple 1" material.

Overall, IMO, the 2" fiberglass is a better material for both bass absorbtion and reflection points. Do you know what density the fiberglass is? No matter what it is, for bass absorbtion, you'll want to double it up to make 4" thick.

One other possible option for the foam would be to reverse what you described. Put the vinyl surface flush with the back of the frame and mount the 2" fiberglass in front. The 1" space in behind the fiberglass will help it extend deeper into the bass and the foam taking up some of the air space certainly won't hurt.

Thanx Bryan for your response,

As my room is fairly small it seems that the rigid fiberglass is going to be more useful than using the vinyl backed foam. I have access to the roll of this foam so I thought I would enquire if there was any way I could use it.

In regards to the 3" Rockwool that I also have access to which is used to wrap around pipework, the diameter approx 8"-10", this is in two halves and shaped so you put the two halves together around the pipework. Could this be used as Bass Traps? Could I put one half in each corner from floor to ceiling and even fill behind with fiberglass?
They would be like pillars in the corners, they would take up less room in my already very small room, but perhaps the standard Trap 24" across the corner is the better option?

Please help clear this one up for me!!

Thanx again!! :) :)
