i'm completely new to recording music, and i need some help. im already going to buy a B1 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone, thanks to you all :D . but i also wanted to record guitar...electric guitar. how exactly do i do that, and what do i buy? thanks so much!!!
 
Errr, what do you have so far? You might start with a guitar.

That's a pretty big question you have there. Do you have anything to plug that B1 into? Computer? Minidisc? Casette? 2 inch 24 track RTR? ;^)

You do know that the B1 needs phantom power to operate, right?

Anyway, 1) plug electric guitar into amp. 2) place microphone, properly connected and levels set to recording device, in front of amplifier, and record. 3) replace microphone and re record ad nauseum until you find the sound you are looking for. 4) realize you didn't get the sound you were looking for replace microphone and re record ad nauseum until you think you finally have the sound. 5) realize you like the first recording better, throw something at the wall and curse. 6) get metaphical, maybe this stuff is completely subjective, or maybe your karma is low today, possibly some zen gardening to get your chi levels up. try some feng shui. meditate. organic vegan cleansing diet. 7) replace microphones and re record, maybe the cous cous or babaganoush did the trick.
 
thank you all sooooo much. i'm still a little bit confused, but im just so glad that somebody responded. okay, so heres my deal.

i have two electric guitars. i have plenty of chords. i have one big amp and a small one. i have a microphone...but its not that good. i have a keyboard(its a pretty good keyboard, but i might be wrong), and i have two computers that i could use.

does all this change anything? oh, and how much do you think all of the equitment should run me? i dont care how much, it doesnt really matter the price. im an insane musician :) and i dont care how much sleep i lose over this one
 
If you got recording software for your computer, then you could probably look into something like a Line 6 Podxt or other brand. If you want to mic your amp, then you'd probably want a better mic and some experience in doing that. With a Podxt you can almost just plug and play. Your computer would probably need a sound card unless it's a Mac. If you want to go with a stand alone unit, then be prepared to shell out a couple hundred dollars for a small digital one. But the computer would be my first suggestion.
 
I personally hate recording to a computer. I prefer the all in one units like the Roland or Boss stuff, or even that Fostex that was linked to earlier.

Computer programs just have so much stuff and so many options that they can confuse even people that know what they are looking for.

Hell, just routing a sound source form my soundcard took me almost 2 weeks of on and off reading and testing the first time....and I knew I needed to do that. I can't imaging what someone who has no idea would have done. Shoot themselves in the head???

For $600 on ebay you can get a Roland VS1680, which is more than enough for most people. It might not be 24 bits and 192khz, but it sounds great for 'home recording'.
