They are kinda cool. The routing options are amazingly nice, and the quad buss (main output buss) compressor is one of my absolute favorite compressors. I used to love to use it for my drum room mics. The only problem with that is you lose your main fader, so you can't really do that when mixing (one of the reasons I usually do most of my dynamics when recording). A pair of
DPA 4006's through the quad comps, just wailling on the comps, and you have one HELL of a rock drum sound (not on its own, of course. THAT would be too much).
They are not a Neve, however. There is something missing with the SSL, at least the 4000 (I haven't used a 9K). And the VCA automation is both wierd to work with (I like to have the fader position represent something, and it doesn't with VCA's), and the VCA's sound a little wierd. Just not quite right. Of course, that one has Ultimation, so VCA's are not an issue. But still, give me a Neve with Flying Faders anyday.
A good deal for one of those, though. If I had the money ...
