I have a windows PC with usb 2.0. My interface is a TASCAM us-1800, which is usb 2.0. It has 8 channels, which I have to have.
My TASCAM is screwing up and constantly gives off these static pops. I'm probably gonna have to get another interface that isn't a piece of crap. But virtually every multi track interface is firewire. My laptop doesn't have firewire ports. What do I do?

Basically I either find a solution for my current interface, find a good usb interface or figure out a way to use firewire. Does everybody have a freakin mac or something?

can you record these "pops"?
I mean are you sure that the cause of pops is Tascam? It could be mic (maybe you are overloading the mic or there is too much humidity where you record (if it's condensor mic)), faulty cable..
Have you tried playing around with buffer settings?

I agree, a recording of the pops would help.

I also think you should check buffer/latency settings. This used to be my cause of nasty pop sounds. Basically, it's when your computer isn't keeping up with your interface.

K man, there are a bunch of answers that will help you. The problem is, there are a thousand questions to get there.

Don't just jump at thinking it won't work. Patience here man.

Need more info on your setup. What OS? RAM? CPU? What else are you running on the PC. Have you optimized for audio recording? Are you familiar with buffer adjustments with the Tascam? Have you downloaded the correct driver? Do you like long walks on the beach? lol! 32-bit or 64-bit OS? Are you using Cubase? If so what version? LE4, LE5, 5, Studio 5, Essential 6, 6? 64-bit? 32-bit?

I am not trying to be facetious here, these are necessary things to know, to figure out the answer to your question.

Tag! Yer it! :D

We will get it figured out man. :)

I am very interested to the outcome of this thread as I have an I-mac and have been thinking of getting the Tascam...

Not sure about the nirvana thing, but this is an interface I have never failed in the ability to get working for another member. Ever. :D

Wow, thanks for the responses guys. I'm glad I posted here. I don't have mics plugged in. It happens as soon as I turn everything on. I have Windows 7 64 with 4 gbs of RAM. I use acid pro 7. I don't know a thing about latency or buffer settings. Im very nooby

Alright, Describe 'it' for me in detail. You say you get 'static pops'. Is that without anything running/playing through the interface? Or when playing something through it?

Ok here's more info. The noise doesn't happen all the time. It first did it after several uses.
I turned it on and this crackling noise started coming out of my monitors. I tried to play a song. The song would play but it would skip and lag and play very choppily. I could kinda here the song through the monitors but it was choppy and skippy. I restarted my computer, problem solved. It happened again a few weeks later. Reboot, solved. Both instances it started immediately upon turning on the interface. I actually thought it was my computer crapping out because a reboot fixed it.

A few days ago I was playing around with Absynth in Acid and all of a sudden in the middle of my session it started doing it again through my headphones. Crackling and lagging vsts. Reboot, solved. Next morning, trying to lay down a drum track through Battery in Acid. About an hour in it starts doing it again. I change my audio settings in Acid to play through my laptop speakers. Everything works fine. Now I know it's the TASCAM. This time reboots don't fix it. 4 reboots. I re install the drivers, still crackling and skipping. I get pissed off and come here. I go to the us-1800 control panel and change the latency to high latency. Reboot, still screwed up except now I'm getting a high pitch ring in my head phones. I unplug everything and give up. I turned it all on again last night and everything was working...for now.

Here I am.

OK, I just turned it on and it's doing it again. Maybe I should mention that no crackling noise comes through unless the interface is plugged into my laptop. If the interface is on but not connected to my laptop, it's silent.

That definitely sounds like either a connection problem, or the interface is being pushed out by another program. First, try a different USB cable. Then try a different port. Have you set the 1800 as your default sound device? (Control Panel>Sound>select the Tascam as your default Playback and Recording device. While you are in there, disable all 'System' sounds. Are you running anything else via USB port besides the interface?

I've already tried other cables and ports. TASCAM is default. I just disabled everything else but no good. It started doing that high pitch ringing again. I have an external hd connected but i've tried it without it before.

Hoping you don't just have a bad unit. It is basically impossible to run an external HD while using the Tascam. On the same USB controller that is. USB 2.0 just does not have the capability of running two streaming devices at once. Trust me, I have tried. I get the same kind of crap you are getting when I try. I use A USB 3.0 connection for the interface now. Never an issue with connection.

All the times it does work the external is connected.
Could this be a latency issue. Isn't that why sounds are lagging?

Well, sound will drop out or give clicks when Buffer is set to low, and your CPU is overworked. High pitched ringing is not a typical side effect of buffer overload.
