I'm fresh out the box;

Ive just been introduced to the wonderful world of music. I really would like to pursue mainly production. Ive been looking into alot of equipment lately, heres what I have in mind.

- PC (Sequencing, Recording, Mixing/Mastering ETC)
- 2.4 Mghz, 60 GB (Audio Apps, ETC), 20 GB (Games, ETC)
- CD burner
- 512 MB

- Roland XP-30 & Emu Mo-Phatt
- Shure SM57 (2), Rode NT1

This is what I plan to buy, I'm not sure about the XP-30 & Emu. I have heard them in demos, and from what I hear those two are what I want soundwise & performance wise. But I still would like to look at the Karma, Triton & Motif. I'm sure about the NT1 & the new PC. Absolutely, I have to include the SM58s. The software Ill use is most likely Cool Edit Pro, Reason, Acid & maybe one of the more complex ones like Cubase or Logic. I know its quite a bit to start off with, I know I shouldn't buy something that I know I will get tired of but I figure that these are some of the best sounding items & equipment around for a decent price. Ill worry about the monitors later on, I can manage on a stereo system. I just want a couple of peoples opinions to see what think about this.

How serious do you wanna get into it?? If it's serious, forget playing games and having other "junk" on your recording computer.
The system you mentioned sounds OK, with probably a bit more RAM, eventhough 512 will do you for the start (I assume SD)...
you need to get a decent soundcard, M-Audio has good products, and I think they're good value for money...as you said, home stereo will do for the "listening"., but consider buying monitors in the near future....

Up the memory in your computer to it's max, 1GB or 2GB usually. It's cheap and is probably one of the cheapest things you can do to improve performance.

Ditto what Roker1 said. Think long and hard about having any other application besides audio recording on your computer. A lot of folks won't even put internet access on their machine.

Ditto the ditto's - also, you mentioned the Rode NT-1 mic - keep in mind that this is a condenser mic and requires 48 volt phantom power, which most sound cards, even the standalone boxes, do NOT provide. You will need either some kind of pre-amp or a mixer with phantom power between that mic and your sound card, unless you pick a sound card that offers phantom power... Steve

Well, I'm as serious as someone who wants to pursue it. I never thought about throwing away the junk that would take up 20GB but I think I will & just leave 5GB for junk. I'm probably gonna go out & pickup a 80GB drive, so Ill partition off the other 5 & work it out so that Ill have 75GB for production related stuff.

I wasnt thinking hard when I posted this, but I just remembered the phantom power issue. Ill probably pickup a pre-amp because I dont wanna spend the extra bills on a console. Ill save that for the future. Ill look into more RAM tonight too, I found out that 512 is falling behind in the ever evolving computer world.
