I'm fifteen. I write pop postpunk music...and it all sucks.

But this is my bands new song. We did it with shitty mics in a shitty room with shitty equipment...and you know what it sounds like shit. But you should listen anyways because...well maybe you shouldn't.

Heres a link:

Enjoy...maybe.

Way to sell it!

Okay, let me explain. It's okay to lack some confidence in what you're doing--even to be insecure. We're all here 'cause we've still got something to learn. But don't say "Guys, here's some garbage. Listen to it please."

Make your post and ask for help if you know where the weak spots are, or ask others what they hear that might be a weak spot. But not "This sucks, check it out, k?"

That'd be like "Oh crap! The milk went bad. It's full of chunks. Here, have a drink!"

Ah..yeah most of that is my twisted form of self-satire. It's not even musical insecurity...I guess it's just part of my sense of humor to say stupid shit like that.

Well until we know you, we don't know that about you. By the way, welcome to the board. I'll give it a listen as soon as I have a minute in the studio.

He doenst have enough posts for a proper link. You have to copy it and paste in a new window.

Did you just put one mic in a room during band practice? Cause thats what it sounds like.

If you really want us to critique this mix I dont know where to begin.
I will advise you however to multitrack...

Mike

Drummer needs to die. I fucking hate this nothing but cymbals thing that seems to be "punk" bands do these days. Pop punk/post pop punk is not the best genre name for this.

It's not awful. Take away half of your drummers drums and turn up your PA.

Use 2 - 4 mics and get a tascam 4 track and everything will sound MUCH better.

Riding the crash cymbals aint so bad if the cymbals sound good. These things sound like trash can lids underwater.

Original poster - you're right. The song sucks, the recording sucks, and you and your band sucks. That's a good thing though. You can fix it and each step is an improvement. Drop the "post" and the "pop" from your self-labeling and get aggressive. Think about all the jocks that probably beat your ass daily. Think about the hot chicks that wouldn't piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire. That is, if you're actually into girls. Play some real punk rock.

Perhaps didn't need to be said in as many words, but I agree with the basic premise.

You've got a lot of work ahead of you, and that's exactly where the fun lies. But definitely drop the pretense and focus your sound.

Keep practicing, you've got years ahead of you, and plenty of distance to travel. Enjoy the trip mate.

not bad! I like the sound of the snare. You've made good with the equipment it sounds, that's my goal- make do with what you got!

I'm 16 and I record acoustic indie stuff that doesn't always go so well. You gotta keep yer head up and push through it

Don't forget to tune your instruments. The bass sounds sharp most of the time (especially on the harmonics).
For the bass specifically, if you having trouble with the tuning of any individual note changing drastically while it rings (i.e. when you pluck the string, it goes sharp initially and then levels back off to the correct pitch after a second), try not plucking the strings as hard (or if you don't let notes ring for very long, tune yourself a little flat).

Also, as nightfire said. Multi-track.

I think it would be a lot less laughable if the drums didn't suck so bad. It definitely sounds like a live recording until the vocals come in.

The great thing about music and recording, though, is that if you like to do them, getting a lot better doesn't feel like work at all. If you try to record just one song a week, you'll be great at it in 2 years...unless you're 60's guy...then it might take a lot longer.

Lol for real. :D :D :D

We actually multi-tracked a lot, and used a lot of mics...the problem is on my DP-02 (hardly good equipment) it wouldn't let me export the tracks seperately so i was forced to mix the whole thing on the units two band eq and panning knobs...instead of in my DAW like I wanted to and tracked intending to.

We are not punk though, our music isn't exactly trying to be the Casualties or Black Flag. It's post-punk (a label thrown on after listening to the song not before) as in my main ifluences here are The Cure and The Pixies and Sonic Youth and new wave/synth pop stuff.

Yes the sets a piece of shit but its used and over thirty years old. The hardware sucks, the snare rattles, the cymbals are cracked...but I can't afford anything else. So I'm just making the best with what I have, and not letting it stop me from trying to make music.

Lastly I plan on remixing it at some point, as I realze the obvious problems (buried kick, tinny guitar (which was actually tracked with a lot of low end..but ended up confused in that mix) it's also one of the first fullband recording I've mixed...(up until now I've recorded very solemn acoustic/ambient type stuff.) But I plan on remixing it before it goes any further.

Trust me there is no pretense. We've been a band for 3 weeks, we did this as something to give to our friends as a "single". I don't exactly take our music thats seriously, but it's fun and it's what I've loved since I was 6 years old.
