I'm really embarrassed for asking because being a drummer for so long, I should already know this this but I'm need of your input. I have a nice Tama Granstar II double bass kit that I'm going to be selling. I wanna scale down a bit to a more "realistic" kit. I don't need two bass drums but I do want a nice tom range (maybe starting with an 8" tom). I also know that I want a lacquer finsh as opposed to a wrap. This will probably be one of my last kits I ever purchase for myself so I want it to be very nice.
The shells that I have now are birch and though they have some punch, they're not capable of giving me the warmth that I'm after. I'm actually considering switching to Pearl drums. I'm a bit confused about their product line though. What is the order they go in terms of quality (best to worst)?
All I know is that I don't want Exports or Stage Customs as I'm pretty sure those are the lower lines. Is Masters Series the highest quality they make? My budget for SHELLS ONLY is going to be around $1800.
Am I being realistic? If not, what can I expect to pay(roughly) for say a 6 pc. set without snare? I haven't bought a new set in over ten years so I'm a bit out of the game.
When I say "My last kit", I mean that it'll be the last kit I buy, not have. I'm embarking on a journey to build a couple of set through drummaker.com. I'll try making a couple of kits but a project I want to work on is to build a replica of the kit Neil Peart use to use in the Moving Pictures era.
Thanks for you input!
