Hey guys im confuse with phantom power and mic pre amp. whats the difference? do i need it both to connect my mic to my computer? or phantom power is a mic pre amp?

Phantom power powers the mic -- Condensers need it, dynamics do not. It's a feature of most mic preamps.

What mic do you have? (dynamic/condenser)

What sort of connection does it have? (XLR/USB)

Do you have an interface (which usually contains a mic preamp, and also usualy provides phantom power to a condenser mic if one is used)? What brand / model

... and what Massive said...

A mic preamp brings the level of the microphone up to a usable (line) level. Some mics require phantom (48V) power like condensers.

They are not the same thing, although like said above, most preamps have 48v power.
