Ok, so I've got GAS big time... and right about now, I've got some cash to spend on it. I live a cheap cheap life so I can run my own little home studio and I charge about 300 a week for some hard hard work. Anyways, I figured since I've always been addicted to mics, this would be the best place to post. And yeah, I'm sorry, it is one of those, what's next posts...

Here's what I've got:

tascam us428
presonus MP20
(crappy behringer board that I really only use for headphone mixes)
Alesis point 7 monitors

Neumann Tlm103
AKG 414
AKG d112
AKG 190e
Studio Projects C4's
SM57
Various junkio mics

so I guess my question is, woul I benefit most from some large diaghphram mics (sm7, re20), more pres/outboard gear (meek 3q, etc), a new board (soundcraft M8), better monitors (the point 7's still require me to check my mix a lot to make sure it transfers well), or a new A/D converter (maya 1010)?

ANNNNYWAY I'm mondo confused. so put yer vote in here.

RE20 is definitely on my wish list. So is the TLM103, but you already have that one.

heh, yeah, and I gotta say, I love it... esp when I got the MP20, really made it stand out... I know a lot of people don't hear much difference when they make the switch to a better pre, but moving from a Behringer to a MP20 really blew my mind in terms of clarity

I think you answered your own question, there, when you said your monitors aren't translating as well as you'd like.

Have you got enough pres at the moment? I mean, numerically? Cos if so, monitors is your next choice. If you want to record more tracks simultaneously than you currently have pres, then do them.

FWIW - Skip the Wharfedale hype and get something trusted. Unless you're getting Wharfedale passives you can hook a good amp up to, I just don't think the 8.2As are all that. I dunno what other people think of them, but I reckon my next pair will be the Genelec 8030As - I know, they're the 'plastic' ones, but in a smallish room they are very accurate and translate well IMHO. Better than HR624s for the same money. Other than that, you have an absolute slew of options that should only tantalise your GAS!!!! :D:D

here's the thing about monitors for me... would i have to spend a ton of $ to get ones that are going to improve significantly on my alesis point sevens? are point sevens decent monitors? I've never had anything but these, so I have no clue if they're not translating well enough, or if I just don't know how to mix well enough, or if I just don't "know my monitors" yet. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I don't know them. But you can be sure those Genelecs would trash them. They come with cool isolation mats ('iso-pods') too. Or get a pair of NS10s - the old saying about how crap they sound is probably true. If you can make a mix that sounds good on them, it's virtually guaranteed to sound good elsewhere. :)

Accoustic treatment. Stop by the Studio Display and Construction Forum if your space isnt already treated

I got a pristine pair of Mackie HR824s on ebay for $900 shipped. So far they've made the biggest difference in the quality of stuff I turn out than any other piece of gear I've bought.

The first thing I would ask myself is... what is lacking in my recordings... then I'd fix it and start over... fit it, start over, fit it, start over and keep fixing/replacing/learning/upgrading until nothing was lacking. So with that said... what is lacking in your recordings, think about it for a moment and then fix it. Of course, if nothing is lacking... you're the best or aren't ready yet. Best wishes, good luck, and have fun. :)
