I'm a rap artist about to start a new album. What mic do I use?

I'm not the newbie everyone thinks I am. Yes, I can rent a mic and take it to my engineer, but that would cost extra.

I could pay 40/hr to record with the knock-off tlm103 with my engineer, or I can go to this other guy and record with his 149 and take those vocal recordings back to the same engineer as before to mix. It's the same price. The issue here therefore is for y'all to look at my music (http://www.soundclick.com/blacksoultan) and tell me IN YOUR OPINION (not my engineer's opinion, I'm sure he'll give me his) if that mic (the 149) would fit what I am trying to do. In other words, would my earlier work have been aided in using this mic as opposed to a mic like the 103?

Why the fuck is this a hard question? Do you people only get a kick out of life by yelling at others on a bulletin board?

First of all, what your voice sounds like in person, and on a recording are not the same. Me personally - I'd say go with an SM58, or an SM7, or an EV RE20/RE-27/PL20 kick drum-style mic (think about it - it's what they use in 99% of the Radio stations and tons of voice over work)..... I like Large Diaphragm Dynamic mic's for male vocals - if the vocals don't contain any real "glass shattering" highs (i.e., Judas Priest/Metal screaming.)
My all time favorite is the Sennheiser MD441.

Rapping is almost like talking, so the vocal range you tend to use is limited - so you don't need a super wide range-condenser for it. I personally am not a big fan of Neumann's for male vocals if I were going to use a condenser anyway.

Just my take on it.

That's admitting you can't answer a question. If a teacher asks you 1 X A to the 3rd = Y. What's "Y"? and you respond with "that's a stupid way of thinking! Go kill yourself!" Rest assured the student is trying to hide his incapability of answering that Y=3rootA. He has no idea how to do the math.

Holy shit. This isn't math, dickhead.

You listen to the mics, and you pick the one that works better.

Remove the douchebaggedness from this response, and I have to agree.

Some people with EXPERIENCE recording certain genres can have some SUGGESTIONS about various mics. That's what the forums are for.

Not for nerdy people making ignorant comments about certain types of music.

Newsflash: Commercial, mainstream rap is just as corny and sorry as commercial, mainstream rock, country, etc.

Rap artists who have higher IQs than many of the detractors here:
Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Blueprint, Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.
They have messages you obviously have not heard, due to your blanket prejudices concerning the genre. Everybody ain't rappin' about bitches and bling, you corny-ass herb-ass fools.

Until you have listened to something other than tired crap on the radio, you are ignorant.

That being said, if you just don't like a certain music (ex. klesmer), you don't like it. But ignorance is not bliss here.

You guys are kinda being dicks about this. I know I've seen similar posts to this (I've narrowed my search down to two mics; what are your thoughts on them) from non-rappers, and they'll get a serious reply from multiple people.

I personally don't own any rap, and rarely leave it on when I hear it on the radio, mind you, but I have to say that it seems some of you are being harsh on this guy either because you hate rap, or are just fed up with the onslaught of rappers asking the same sorta questions. Either way, this guy is a noob, asked a fairly straightforward question, and did so using real English. If you don't have any help for him, then either suggest where to get help, or move on. There's plenty of other crap to read on this site.

I thought the big thing with you (c)rappers was about all that money you had.Shit playa,go buy yo sef a nice front end wif yo ends.
But seriously, here is a thought:a tin can and some string.

Now i know that this thread is kinda heated over the soultan guy, but there is no need to stereotype a whole genre of music based on what certain people in that genre do. I myself am a rapper and i don't rap about bad/degrading issues and i keep a clean mouth. That statement was very offensive to me. What you said is like me saying everyone in Elton John's genre of music is gay and in a gay marriage. Is that true?

Another rap mic threat? Hey guys, go for the Shure SM57 or Shure SM58. Best value for money.

O.K. counselor, here is an answer.Take some of that money that you fuck others out of and buy a mic.
Your true reason for being here was to pimp your soundclick page anyway,
so fuck off.
Sue me.

Well put....

ya know what i say, if you've got the cash burning a hole in your pocket
buy the u87i.
used a million times on a million million sellers, you'll like it just fine.
and you can allways sell it later if you want.

(don't forget the 300$ shockmount)

The C800G is an oustanding mic for R&B, but is very pricey.

My pick would be the m149. The 103 and U87ai are known for their top end. I would think the m149 has a bigger bottom which would be more suitable for your style.

If you're looking to make a GOOD album, then you should spend the money to get the engineer you want, as well as rent the mic he thinks will make you sound better. It can't be THAT damn expensive.

amasing how every post about anything to do with rap ends up the same..........................................YEEHA

how about the SM7 or 57

cripes

fight fight fight fight

Stop chasin' your tail..I listened to your stuff and it sounds as good as every other commercial hop thing I have heard...you can't do any better than that at your price point of 40$ an hour..go back to your engineer and make some music..stop worrying about the mic..your guy did a nice mix at a very reasonable price...
