Illegal Sonar upgrade?

I have been using a copy of Sonar 2.0 XL, that I got from a friend a few years ago. It is most likely hacked.

It being unregistered, is it possible to upgrade it with a registered upgrade package?

Am I being a really evil person for wanting to save a few hundred bucks?

People like you drive up the cost of software for people who actually pay for it.

Don't expect much help from people here by admitting stuff like that.
 
This is the first time I have ever been "people like you" before. I guess that is bad. Doesn't wanting to spend money on a upgrade redeem me at all? I have never used the original software for anything other than evaluation for a few hours.
 
But an upgrade is usually for registered (read: legal) software. Yes, it's nice you want to pay, but upgrading from a cracked/bootlegged version is probably not an option.
 
It's like saying (making up amounts) "well...instead of stealing $500, I'll only steal $300".

It's still stealing. It still hurts all the legitimate purchasers.
 
I'm sure you're right. I will just bite the bullet and buy Sonar 4.0 studio.

Forget I brought it up, please (if the copyright police come looking for me).
 
meh, you're better than a lot of tools around here who don't give a crap at all. if you enjoy recording as a hobby, buy the product. it is worth it to get the company support and deals on future upgrades.

if you know sombody in school, get them to get an academic licence for you at studica.com. still greasy, but tolerable.
 
Think of it this way:

If you buy a stolen car off the street from somebody, do you think you can/should just walk into a dealership and get a trade-in on a new car???

No different...
 
Simple answer: You can't.
Not-so-simple answer: If you do, that serial number can't be used again.

and yes, you can go and buy upgraded versions for your educational version.

had you taken the time to read the thread, we are onto getting a LEGAL copy via an academic licence....

quit filling threads up with garbage.
 
I don't suppose if I enroll myself in one of those fly-by-night internet schools Icould get a student discount? Anywho....I did the same route years ago, omce I went legit and bought the program I was thankful because I could then log on and download the necessary patches and fixes that enevitably are released throughout the lifetime of the sfotware. Some of the fixes/patches are actually quite important. I was having probs with my new sonar 4.0 producer Edition but once I got the 4.0.01 patch from being a registered user it fixed all my probs. plus I'm gonna go to heaven now since I am a good person.
 
Keep in mind that academic versions CAN NOT be used for commerical recordings. Meaning, you can't make money off any project recorded with academic software.

The good news, is Cakewalk does allow academic users to upgrade to newer versions at the discounted upgrade prices.

Just food for thought.
