Stop it, I can't breathe
Hey there, I'm on a roll!

This is the 'disco' track I promised to upload. Don't nag about the fake drums, because that's 200% intentional (it's disco, remember).

Of course I can't write a real 'disco' song: it again evolved into a bloody unmixable 70 track piece. Let's call it symphodisco :) It's way too full, but I like full (I believe it was Rush's Neil Peart who used to say: 'less is more, but more is more fun)

I shall translate the lyrics for you, because they're pretty funny (thanks Marco!):

1st verse:
you're reading the papers,
you'd like to talk about it
pretty interesting
but you don't even notice I'm not interested
quite embarrassing
better leave it that way
because again I'm thinking about music (chorus sings: my own music)

chorus:
I'm an asshole,
I'm such a dick,
Always thinking about myself (or egocentric as hell, second time)
I'm a dick
as big as Paris (or Rio, second time)
...including the suburbs
('including the suburbs', Marco is a lyrical genius! :D )

bridge

I have no idea,
how you put up with me
with an asshole like me

:D

This song is for my wife, of course (who still loves me, despite my lust for music)

Btw, I hope the moderators can accept my foul mouth...:)

Real slick production. Sounds very clean. Is that a real bass? It sounds nice and works well for the type of music. The vocals sound real nice (lots of layers). Terrific harmonies. Everything is played very well.

The lyrics (translated) don't seem to say much (I'm probably thick).

I still don't know what the German word is for ass-hole. :D I'm not sure I'd consider this disco. Don't know how others feel.

Good job. Trip...

Thanks for listening TripleM! It's a real bass, yes.

The lyrics (translated) don't seem to say much (I'm probably thick).

Well, my wife got the message. And that's what counts. :) (perhaps I should keep my lyrics dutch and secret in the future)

German? Eh? I'm dutch!

"disco"? I hate disco...well most of it. But this has a diffrent taste to it. I really liked the vocals on this ( and that badass bass) mix was great for this..

I enjoyed everything you did on this tune. The tune itself is cool. I like the rythymn guitar in the first section of the tune a lot. only negative thing I had was that snare, just a little too metallic sounding for me. This was a good listen, Ped

Intense mix- The bass is immaculate- very bouncy, just rolls along. The guitar fills are very appropriate, and the solo isn't too bad either (though you should added some harmonies to it as well). The vocals are very well arranged and performed; I'll take it from your guitar solos and choir-like bgv's that you enjoy a little Queen as well as SELF.

What's your vocal channel like?

I must agree that the snare needs some work- it almost sounds like your working for a lo-fi snare with a nice polished dance-y number. I'd like to hear it with a big fat gated Phil Collins snare!!

And, I don't think I'll call this disco either

But I will call it enjoyable

Peace

Thanks! :D

Drumwise, I'm your worst nightmare I'm afraid. I chose (and will always) choose the 'wrong' sounds and program 'unnatural sounding' parts. Because I like it. Get used to it, hahaha :D

So the snare is a keeper...(I'll tell mr. Prince Roger Nelson his snare sounds cheapo, hahaha, the sample comes straight from a Prince record :) )

And btw, I've built the whole song around that snare. Ditching it feels like writing a song with a friend and muting all of his tracks on the final mix. Besides, a big ass snare would fill the mix at points where it should be quiet. And the most important thing: with a thin snare it's still mixable for me. :)

Vocal channel:

Stagg MCO-7BK > Joe meek VC3Q > Creative Audigy > WaveArts Trackplug for eq/compression/gate

Wait, I forgot: this one was still recorded with my Shure BG5.1!

Yes, I love Queen and Self (and harmonies in general)

hmm, beetje DOEMAAR/SPINVIS mengseltje.. grappig

What the hell, it doesn't matter... :)

The title is a magic lure for dutchies...where are they coming from?

hey Ped,
...Very nice dynamic recording man. Im not sure i would consider it disco... I got more of a dancy 80's vibe. I like the breakdown at the end. Very nice bass.... ....and again, very nice recording.

g

btw: How long did this one take to record?

Thanks Guernica! All together this one took me one full week (8-10 hours a day) I'm afraid. Spread out over a couple of months, since I'm always working on a 10 songs at the same time...I kept adding stuff, but now I finally believe it's finished. I might even mute some tracks in the final mix to make room for the vocals.

Oops, here I go again...replying to one post only. I should learn to do it in batches ;)

To a backwards solo? And add some more harmonies? Don't you think 70 tracks are MORE than enough? Are you insane?! :D

for such an ugly puss on your avatar:eek: the song actually sounds pretty cool.

Nice interesting things to keep your attention. If you could wank some more punch out of this puppy, that'd be great. Chest thumpers..eh? Nice solo.

Sometimes it seems the lead voc. might almost be competing with the background vocals, but then again, that might be called for too.

didn't understand a word!!;)

Pretty polished. You sing in tune, too. :D This is very good music. I like the way that bass sound pumps, I like your singing a lot, I like that odd little beat shift that happens occasionally, and I like the slow segment at the end. I've been wondering how you could improve the sound of it, and the only thing that I can think of is to get better gear. :D

Sounds commercial quality to me. Home recording, you say?

Thanks for your words, Dobro. Very much appreciated!

Yeah, my Audigy is still on my replacement list (but I find it very difficult to choose the right replacement soundcard). I guess the only real pro stuff in my setup are my two Pedulla basses (there's a list on my bio page on NWR, btw). And perhaps some of the plugins I'm using are pro also...

I've recently replaced my mic. I was thinking about rerecording this song with my new mic but I feel hesitant to redo all these vocal parts (about 30). Takes too much time, and sounds pretty fine already. Better record a new song. No time to waste, gotta move on :)

Yeah, exactly, don't go back and redo when it's really well done already.

Do you know about an engineer (Dutch originally, I think) who used to spend a lot of time on this board, a guy who called himself Sjoko? A very good engineer, completely dedicated to digital recording, and absolutely convinced that until you get your hands on dedicated A/D D/A converters and a system clock, you don't stand a chance of getting sound that's as clear as clear can be. He's an engineer geek, of course, impossibly perfectionist, but I've got a lot of respect for his opinions about recording sound. If I had $2K to spend, I'd be awfully tempted to go that route instead of a better mic and pre.

I don't know him, but words like dedicated A/D D/A converters and a system clock scare the hell out me :D

I'm a composer/musician, not a technician. I like good sound, but within certain limits....;)

Sounds more fun to sing in Dutch than in English. :)

Very fun dance music...Nice vocal production!

Pedullist,

finaly got the song downloaded.
Sounds cool, reminds me of the popmusic when i was a kid (80's).
The lead vocal could be a be a bit louder somtimes it's a bit buried in the other 69 tracks. :D
What processor did you used 4 guitar? there a lot of freaky guitar riffs in it.
