Hey, i NEED a second mic... and was looking on zzounds.com to see which ones got the best ratings for my price range (about $300, maybe $400) If you had to pick one of these, which would it be and why??? Thanks

Rode NT1000
Audio Technica AT3035
M-Audio Solaris
Studio Projects TB1

BTW, if ALL of these are crap can someone please make a better suggestion. (Im pretty much forced to buy my equipment online -- there are no stores to really compare and test gear in my area)

I'm a big fan of the 3035 for male vocals, acoustic guitars, & drum overheads.

To be fair, I haven't used the others too much to really give a unbiased opinion.

the only one I have is a 3035. I wouldn't recommend that one. I have never used the TB1 but I have a B1 and a C1 and I love them both...only knowing what I know now...Id choose the tb1...but you will probably get some answers from people who have used the others...

interested in selling it? i could use another.

sorry to hijack this thread.

you can just pm me if you want.

I don't know much about the specific mics you listed, but if my budget was 300-400 dollars I would pick the AT4050 I have listed on for sale section for $400:D

I agree with xstatic. the AT line anywhere above the 300 dollar mark is pretty decent. Also check out the studio projects c1.

See if you can track down a used AT-4050 or a Shure KSM-32. You should be able to pick one up for less than $400. Either would be better than the mics you listed IMHO. If your preamp has enough gain, you could also consider a Shure SM7. Others you could consider are a Beyer M88 or even an Audio Technica AE5400 (a handheld mic with the same capsule as the AT-4050 but cardioid only with a roll off switch).

I run my mics into a Mackie 1202VLZ (they say those preamps it has are pretty good...)

Whats a good place/website to find a QUALITY used mic???

Other ones to condsider; MXL V67, Shure KSM-32, BLUE.
Or maybe a good quailty dynamic mic like the EV RE20 or SM-7.

I'm with xstatic. No doubt in my mind... the AT4050 or even 4047 rocks. But I'd get the 4050!

Or, for RnB, if you want to save a little more, go with the Rode K2 Tube... I find this to be my favorite for RnB stuff.

Well, as much as I hate to say it, the cheap choice R&B mic seems to be the MXL V69.

Personally, I'd go with something in the AT 40 series with the preference going to the AT4047.

This Board and GearSlutz are good sources of used gear. I've bought lots of stuff off of GS. Given the fact that a number of posters on GS are VERY accomplished engineers and producers, it's interesting to speculate who might have actually used the gear you buy there. :D I've also bought lots of mics off of e-bay and only had one dud out of about 85 purchases -- and he did say that it had low output. All the usual cautions for buying things over the net apply. The Musicgoround site can be decent too. If you are concerned about buying from an unknown private party, you might want to try them as they are a commercial operation. Search the website and then call the appropriate store. The prices vary by store and can be hit or miss, but you can often find some decent stuff at a reasonable price.

If I were you I'd be sending a PM to Xstatic right now for that AT4050.
