And you needed to buy the following.....what would U buy, and why?

Soundcard
Mic
Cables for everything
Pre-amp

what sources will you be recording? (vocals, electric guitars, drums, etc)

whats the maximum simulatneous sources you will be recording at one time?

I would spend it on a good Tube Compressor such as the Avalon Tube/EQ compressor.

Shake, it would be an excellent idea to speak to someone like
Fletcher at Mercenary Audio on this level of expenditure,
particularly regarding the various mic and pre choices.
Their website is www.mercenary.com

Marshall MXLv77 - microphone
Great River ME-1NV - preamp
RNC - compressor
Lynx One - soundcard

If I was recording different singers and HAD to be limited to just one microphone, the new AEA R84 ribbon would be quite tempting. It's based on the RCA 77DX and RCA 44 which have a track record of working on many different types of voices.

Next in line IMHO would be the Electro-Voice EV RE20 (or PL20).
It is reputed to do a credible or better job on most voices.

Now if you are cool with two or more microphones, then that opens up many more reasonable choices...

Gidge pretty much nailed it. I might go with a NTK over the Marshall but that may be over your budget. Let's see.

Great River - $995
RNC - $179
Lynx - $449 @ Bayview
NTK - $400

Ok I'm $23 over not counting tax.
Cables would be extra but not much, most of this stuff comes with its own cables including the mic.

This would be a kick ass setup by the way.

Seems like we're looking for either 1) a really great pre, a decent mic and a decent soundcard OR 2) a really great mic, a decent pre and a decent soundcard OR 3) a really great soundcard and a decent mic and decent pre. I can't see you getting two "really great" anything for that budget. $2000 IS a lot of money, but to get a "gold channel" it's a bit short. $3k - $4k and I think you can really begin to make things happen.

Option 1:
PRE: Consider the Great River ME 1-NV or Grace 101 or an API module or an FMR RNP or.... Sebatron 2 channel (limited info out there on this one)
MIC: Studio Projects C1, Marshall V69, Shure KSM (several here), used Audio-Technica 4050 (the 4033 is too limited in its sound to be the only mic) or low end ADK mics
SOUNDCARD: Lynx Audio One, MAudio Delta 1010, Echo Audio Layla or possibly the Lynx Audio Two L22 (depending on which mic you buy)
CABLES: www.markertek uses Canare cable for it's "house" brand... I"ve got some... good stuff on par with Mogami (which I also own). Full compass has mogami at reasonable prices. Good cable is not negotiable here so Mogami, Canare, Belden or similar quality are minimum. Don't pay big money for Monster... it's a rip.

Option 2:
PRE: RNP (isn't it amazing that the RNP could be your "gold pre" yet is priced to also be your "decent" pre
MIC: Soundelux U195 or Lawson L47SH ($995) or one of the high end ADK mics or ... one of the B.L.U.E. mics or a used high end mic for ~$1,000
SOUNDCARD: same choices for soundcard
CABLES: same as above

Option 3:
PRE: RNP
MIC: Studio Projects C1, Marshall V69, Shure KSM (several here), used Audio-Technica 4050 (the 4033 is too limited in its sound to be the only mic) or low end ADK mics
SOUNDCARD: Lynx Audio Two (pick your type A, B, or C)
CABLES: same

GR ME-1NV, used u87 (unless the Steven Paul thing lives up to its hype).

- Rode NTK (400)
- used Focusrite Green or Red (500)
- Digi 002R

I wouldn't get a used mic. You never know how often it had been dropped and how many people spit at it. Preamps are less critical if you get them used coz they sit in the rack. If you get the Digi 002R you'll get ProTools for free! That's a killer setup!
