...to record guitar and voice on a home PowerMac G-4/Digi 002R/Protools system, what would you get?

Do you have an example of the voice you could post?

I'd buy a decent preamp and either the SM7B or the Audio Technica 4050. There is not a $1500 mic that these don't compete with and the Digi 002R preamps are just not going to get you to a top level sound.

My recommendation, on preamps, would be either the Envoice or a Chameleon. Along with the mics above, they would produce a remarkable sound.

If you're going to skip the preamp idea then probably the AT4060 would be my call.

Warhead,

Sorry, I don't currently have a sample of my voice. I have a fairly powerful, loud, music voice though.

I'm assuming you mean acoustic guitar when you said recording guitar.

I'd get a matched pair of ADK Hamburgs which will do an excellent job on acoustic and your vox. It will also do well on a guitar amp if you end up recording electric guitar. If you email newsoundcard they will sell you the mics at the starting bid. Here's their auction for the Hamburgs.

Since you didn't mention a mic pre I'll suggest the FMR RNP which will work well with the Hamburgs and can be bought for under $500. It's here.

The total of the above is under $1000 so you still have another $500 to spend. That will get you an AT4050 or a couple of decent SDC Mics. Good luck.

Ijmaxx,

I'll be recording electric guitar almost exclusively. Very little or no acoustic guitar.

MD421 and a Great River MP-1NV.

Well for electric guitar my favorite mic is the AEA R84 ribbon, and I've personally never acheived better cab mic'ing results before owning it. It is also great for many vocals, but it's hard to say if it will work absolutely with yours. I love it on acoustic guitar and drums also.

For $1500 I'd probably get a Studio Projects T3 for $500-ish and an R84 for $1000-ish. That'd be a pretty kick ass application for both of your needs, that T3 is about as nice as it gets for a $500 tube mic.
