RIAA Demands Payments from College Students
Fri Mar 9, 2007 10:46AM EST

How would you like to get this email from your college kid, the one you're shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for to pay for his education? "Hi Mom: The recording industry says I owe them $3,000 or they're going to sue me! Help!"

Help, indeed. As I wrote in a previous post, the Recording Industry Association of America is getting tough on illegal music downloads, and taking aim where free downloads are as common as Frisbees, college campuses. The RIAA has sent letters to 50 Ohio University students telling them each to pay $3,000 for illegally downloaded music files to avoid lawsuits accusing them of stealing songs from the Internet, the AP reports. The association, which is stepping up its legal action on college campuses, has already sued more than 18,000 computers users since 2003, and more than 1,000 of them were computer users at 130 universities.

What's the diff? If you are allowed to make up your own rules, isn't everyone else, too?

no, you idiot, the people who make up the rules are ignorant and make them up arbitrarily as they go or rather to suit their best interest, that's why smart people like me and P.J. find workarounds that work better for SOCIETY AS A WHOLE, while people like you think you're doing the right thing by toeing the imaginary line made by idiots in power.

I think people with a penchant for rape, paedophilia and murder are the ones you should be worrying about in 'moral guidelines' terms.

I buy software if I can afford it, however I'm not going to deprive myself if I don't have the cash because no-one has lost any business at all. However I tend to find free or cheap solutions since there usually is one. For example I plan to buy Reaper shortly as the 30 day 'shareware period' coincides with my payday.

However I'd never steal someones physical property or intentionally damage something physical since it's often expensive or irreplaceable.

Suggesting I have no moral guidelines just sucks, to be honest. I'm always as nice to people as I possibly can be, I help out family and friends when they're in trouble, need help, or need a shoulder to cry on. I give a reasonable amount to charity considering my less than average wage and have given a lot of my free time recently to design and build a website for a local charity.

Also, I'd like to remind some people here that some of us do this for our own personal enjoyment. I don't make a single penny from recording or mixing, and trust me, when that day comes I'll be paying for every last thing I use, or getting rid of it. I would never ever consider using copied/pirated tools to make a profit, period.

I'm a believer that big business buys software and subsidises those who use it for personal use, and I'm fine with that since big business make their money from us.

Just take the time to examine the skeletons in your own closet before judging others.

He made a rule about what I can or can't do. That makes him ignorant etc. by your definition.

no dewd, i said that I don't approve of pirating if you make over 25k a year to begin with (which isn't that much), I also said I don't approve of pirating programs like reaper made by a small company and priced very affordably...so you're wrong about me, to put it blunt I just have better ideas then corporate america and their dull followers, u  ?

Here's a quick question for you all:

If I was to download a cracked software that I don't have any intention of buying (for example something really expensive like Waves Diamond bundle), who am I hurting? I'm not talking abou moralities or legalities. I simply want to know who's life am I depriving (of something, anything..) by doing that?

What about in a few years, when I've got a steady income and may be making decisions for the particular studio I'll be working at in terms of what to buy next. Let's assume that I downloaded that Waves bundle. I'll know it, and if I like it I'll buy it for the studio.

Now who have I hurt? What harm have I caused - to anyone?

That all seems pretty arbitrary to me.

You guys can use all the cracked software you want, just don't try to rationalize it. It makes you sound stupid.

it's a slippery slope, if you get one expensive program free you mine as well get them all and you won't have the motivation to get up real early in the morning and go out and make that steady income so you can eventually help the corporate economy by pushing yourself to work many many hours so you can buy more newer crap version 999999999.0 and push yourself to work harder to buy more crap and newer versions and more up to date hardware and new software along with the drivers and if you get ANYTHING for free it's bad for your work habits and you're training to be part of the corporate economy, you have to train yourself to be a robot for corporate america and if you are able to sit back and just make music and not worry about having the newest most expensive software by working hard to get it then you will be a lazy bum and be of no use to corporate america, understood?

that's because you lack imagination and creativity due to being brainwashed by corporate america and their "laws"...they weren't created by people with the best interest of the populace at heart, they were created with the best interest of the corporations.

I'm a true patriot because I think the government should be of, for, and by the people...instead it's of, for, and by the corporations and people like you co-sign their wretched policies aimed solely at getting them a higher profit margin with no concern for negative societal effects.

and if you took everything i said in my post about laws serious it's obvious you are somewhat gullible and the concept of sarcasm escapes you.

yeh - my motivation for working isn't so i can buy plugins ;)

that comes further down the list after things like paying the rent, the bills, putting food on the table...

my point is i'm a poor student right now. in a few years time, i'll have a job with "disposable income". see where i'm going with this?

i'm still waiting to hear who i'm hurting..

like i said, it's slippery slope, you start being able to create music without having to pay 1k for a program and another 1600 for cpu and soundcard and and you will be nothing more then a musical bum, your motivation to reach for the stars and be as rich as you possibly can will be thwarted and your fate will be that of a musical bum, satisfied simply be creating art and working just enough for basic necassities, you won't feel the need to pull 60 hour work weeks on a regular basis, you will be a parasite feeding off of our corporate dynasty which does not approve of those who don't keep striving for more and more and more and more and more and more and more..................................................

Um, yeah, OK.

My point is do what you want, but your rationalizing is no better than anyone else's.

That's where you're wrong my frden, my rational might not be better then everyone else's but it's certainly better then corporate america's rational, which is that profits are the ONLY thing that matters, people are just cattle that feed the corporate economy and they should receive little to no consideration.
