Ideal Computer for recording

Right, I'm thinking of buying a new computer, well just the tower. My set up for recording is A Presonus FP10 into Cubase SX3.
I don't have too much problem at the moment, but I can feel my current computer having trouble when you start adding in masses of guitar tracks and a bass track. It really fucks up if I use things like Amplitude or lots of VST plugins.

I started looking into the cost of a new tower and I'm not really sure whether to go for a dual core or quad core. I'm currently using a computer that is about 5 years old, I think it's got a Pentium 4 in it. So that makes me think I can probably just get a dual core, but I don't want to make any mistakes.

I also figure I need a decent amount of RAM and a large HD.

So any advice would be great.

Computer Qestion

Hey whats up man.

Well first things first.............if your computer is only acting up due to the masses of vst's and guitar tracks I would first upgrade your RAM. It also has to do with your processor and hard drive speed. Ram is really cheap tho and that is where i would start out. You will want a minimum of 2 gig if your computer will allow it. You can record with way less than that but 2 gig will smoothly get you through those vst and guitar tracks. That is unless your processor is reeeaaallllllly slow....... If it is then maybe it is time to upgrade your computer

This is where it gets more expensive.

1. Try to get a duel core processor......this is standard for a lot of new computers these days....If you can find a decently priced Quad Core GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!. A Quad core WILL EAT UP THOSE VST'S AND GUITAR TRACKS ETC......AND THEN SOME.

2. Make sure it has a MINIMUM of 2 gig of RAM.....if your buying new though computers are pretty high tech for the price these days so i would recomend 4 gig of ram if you can find a good deal. If not Dont worry about it cuz you can pull out your old ram from you new computer......Then buy new ram and Wah la!!!!! 4 gig of ram.

3. As far as Hard Drives go........try to get something that is at least 250 gig or so......yea i know thats a lot of space but hey some people would probably reccomend a whole lot more than that. Also make sure your hardrive is rated at LEAST........"7200 RPM".........

If you just go to ebay and type in desktop or laptop computer all of these things will show up..........and should give you a good idea as to what you will want to record with.
