I had an idea along these lines that I posted in the mixing/mastering forum several weeks ago.
http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69920&highlight=mixing+contest
Essentially, it isn't a recording challenge but a mixing challenge. Someone submit the tracks to be used, and everyone uses those to create their own mix. Not using tracks would be fine, but adding new ones would not.
Tracks could be used in any way, doubled, pitch shifted, slowed/sped up, staggered in not so obvious ways as far as combining tracks (i.e., using the second "chorus" from one track with the first from another).
It might be interesting to see how different members used compression, reverb, effects, etc.
Might be something that would take less of the member's time as a challenge, since there would be no tracking to do. Also, it would include more of the members, since software seems to be on a much more equal footing than the musical talent/instruments/mics/pre's/etc. are.
psst... it also might help us lowly newbies sort out which member's suggestions and opinions should be given serious respect and attention, not that all suggestions aren't valuable, but you know what I mean...
Just another idea for the idea pot.
