idea?

Crawdad, I lOVE the themed ideas (one mic, no canned reverb, etc). It should be as inclusive as we can make it. Let's do it.

I had an idea along these lines that I posted in the mixing/mastering forum several weeks ago.

http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69920&highlight=mixing+contest

Essentially, it isn't a recording challenge but a mixing challenge. Someone submit the tracks to be used, and everyone uses those to create their own mix. Not using tracks would be fine, but adding new ones would not.

Tracks could be used in any way, doubled, pitch shifted, slowed/sped up, staggered in not so obvious ways as far as combining tracks (i.e., using the second "chorus" from one track with the first from another).

It might be interesting to see how different members used compression, reverb, effects, etc.

Might be something that would take less of the member's time as a challenge, since there would be no tracking to do. Also, it would include more of the members, since software seems to be on a much more equal footing than the musical talent/instruments/mics/pre's/etc. are.

psst... it also might help us lowly newbies sort out which member's suggestions and opinions should be given serious respect and attention, not that all suggestions aren't valuable, but you know what I mean...

Just another idea for the idea pot. ;)

CAN SOMEBODY MAKE THESE FINE IDEAS INTO A POLL??

I think it's time...and I think this thread should die, and we should just start a new one with a poll, b/c not everybody is checking this one anymore. The title should be something catchy, like...

IF YOU POST SONGS HERE, READ THIS: (hehehehehe)

this is really starting to sound FUN!!

yeah, where's the poll!! ;)

the alternative drum thing sound's cool

no effect's=cool

unplugged=cool

covering other member's=cool(that's bbs member's) :D

everyone using the same lyric's=cool.....................................
.................

I have an idea if we do the lyric's challenge. The month before we do that one, we should post a word association thread to get the lyric's for the tune!! that could be FUN!!

Hell this whole thread= cool!!!!!!!!!! great ideas!!

OK. I'll see if I can put it up tomorrow (Sunday). I'm too tired to think tonight.

I'd go for the poll idea too... just try and keep it to options that won't exclude anyone, if possible.... whether it be by lack of equipment or by lack of desire.

An example of "lack of equipment" would be... I have no drums, and I don't use drums in my recordings.. plenty of people just do acoustic/piano/whatever recordings. There are also those who can't sing or who really only sing because they absolutely have to, so a challenge based on drums or vocals would exclude those who don't really deal with those areas much, or at all. And example of "lack of desire" would be.... if we do a "tribute" to some band, it may very well be a band that a number of people here either 1) hate or 2) just plain don't listen to. In those cases, you'd have very little motivation on the part of some people to even get involved.

I think there have been great ideas so far, but before you make a poll, I'd just suggest that you try to include the ideas that would be the most "all encompassing" challenges. Just a thought.

of course... I'm kinda partial to the "cover another HR.com member's song"... but that's only cause I want a chance to do one of Erland's tunes... :D  :p I have feeling that if we pick that option, half the stuff will be his tunes. :D (and with good reason. :p )

WATYF

I wouldn't worry about challenges excluding people. That's what makes them challenges... getting you to do things you wouldn't normally do. Besides, if we do these every month or every other month, there will be plenty of chances to jump in on one.

hmmmm...i STILL dont see a POLL???

Jamal--good things are worth waiting for, right?:D

Actually, I'm putting it together pronto. Stay tuned.

the idea is to have a contest to make mixes in 90 minutes? is that what all the 1.5 stuff is about?

It was to record and mix within 90 minutes.
