personally, the things that have been mentioned that grappbed my opinion were:

1. tribute CD of songs written by one particular artist or group.

2. tributes to other members of the clinic.

3. collaboration: someone submits a very basic song, just a chord progression and lyrics (with melody) and each of us attempt to add parts to it and produce and we can all see what everyone's interpretations would be.

4. each of us takes a song that is nowhere near the style that we normally do and cover it in our own style... OR we take a song that IS the type of thing that we normally play, and produce a cover version in a different style... for instance, i'm into punk rock... so i could either take a garth brooks song and play it like blink 182 would... or i could take a blink 182 song and play it the way garth would...
I agree entirely with this post. The weird part is gonna' be coming to some kind of a consensus...I mean, it'd be cool if we were all working on THE SAME cool idea at the same time.

I also like Crawdad's idea of the ONE SONG deal. I mean, to hear Sami and Erland both turn out a version of Stairway To Heaven would be pretty cool.

What do we do...Vote for January's "PROJECT"?

I think all these ideas sound cool! I'm trying to figure out a way to create a level playing field, so to speak. The reason 1.5 flew was because it was a challenge that almost everybody was game to try. I'm looking for those things that don't exclude half the board right from the premise. So maybe some of my ideas won't work.

A friend of mine belongs to a stereo photography club and each month they have an assignment based on a theme. Maybe we could do something like that. The other thing might be to have a multiple choice assignment, arranged in a way to make sure everybody could tap in to at least one idea. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid pre defined styles right off the bat. If we were to pick a song to cover, it ought to be something that could work in a bunch of styles, ya know? Some of Erlands stuff comes to mind.

On the other hand, I really like the idea of working in a style thats totally out of my comfort zone. Those kinds of projects can really make me grow and learn, which is a good thing, right? Such a project might be: do a recording of some music that is 180 degrees from what you are known for in the clinic. I'd have to do something like Nirvana, Participant would do some George Jones, and B. Sabbath would cover some Sinatra!:D

I say, lets keep the ideas coming. When we get a bunch, me or someone else can post a poll on all of them--simple yes or no--and we can see where the most agreement lies. Based on that, we can create assignments, challenges, projects--whatever we want to call them.

Oh, I think that these should be bi-monthly. Otherwise, theres not gonna be any attention given to the other efforts that show up in the clinic. Personally, I don't want to live with a constant traffic jam of new submissions. There's just no way to keep up for us working folks! Plus, I'm afraid that a lot of excellent work will fall through the cracks. As a matter of fact, if we do an assignment thing, I'd love to see a "window" of submission of maybe five days. I don't want to deal with Son of 1.5 all month long, even though I loved the 1.5 stuff. We gotta give some other stuff a chance to breathe. My 3 1/4 cents.

Wow...what a bunch of great ideas.maybe I'll find the time to join in on some of this fun soon.I think Im gonna hold of on my 1.5 till the board slows down a little bit.It would leave the front page within an hour!:D

......Yeah, .....the clinic is moving way too fast:(

....I check in in the morning..... By the time I take a peek after work there's a page and a half of new posts....

.....cant keep up (sniff) :(

Let us know what you think, crawdad... a "level" playing field would definitely help.

Should we say... March 5-10 as the next "window?" Too soon? Not soon enough?

Where should we post the poll? In here? Visitor's forum? Dragon cave?

What should be in the poll? Should crawdad decide that? ;) (yes :D)

you know, there's always the possibility of everyone voting on one song (preferably one that's not too difficult to perform or sing) no mariah carey or van halen please) and we can all cover it, attempting to reproduce it is closely as possible, down to the mixing and vocals and everything.

i could even see collaborations coming out of it... people could work together.. each lending their individual strengths to one particular song, forming psuedo-"cyber bands" to compete...

This is starting to sound fun. Crawdad, I think you have the right idea.

March 5-10 sounds about right. I think the poll ought to be here, since it pertains to this forum and no other--right?

Now--how to do this poll? I've never done one. Are the polls limited to one response or can you select multiple items? How do we figure out what ideas have the most agreement, thats what I want to know. Anybody who has experience with doing this, chime in. I'd be happy to give it a try or to let somebody else do it--doesn't matter.

options:

Below find a summary of the thread so far. Ideas may have been repeated by another poster, and so are not listed.

"The Next Big Thing" --> March 5-10th

Track Rat - One particular cover tune
Crawdad - 2.0 hr song
- Tribute to Dylan/Hendrix/etc.
- One mic
- Unplugged
- everone start with same acoustic/vocal track

JR#97 - free-for-all
- Collaborations
- hard & heavy
- Live (no overdubs)
- Covers (reinterpreted in new style)
- collaborate on same lyrics; each write different music
- Tribute to Beatles
(Make CDs from the challenges)

Myx62 - wives/girlfriends do VOX
parti - Cover other BBS members' stuff
dres - Vocal "choir" collaboration (we are the clinic :D)

The other thing might be to have a multiple choice assignment, arranged in a way to make sure everybody could tap in to at least one idea.

O.K.... if we want more participation, and more of a level playing field... would Al's multiple choice option be a good way to go? Anyone? Like "pick one of four", or something?

If so... which four? Should we just all pick the four best here in this thread, and then make the poll?

Also -- WHAT SHOULD WE CALL THIS THING? The HomeRecording.com MP3 Clinic Bi-Monthly Challenge? "Shirley"? "Toonfest"? "Crapfest"?

Al... some guidance...? :(

---

Should I start?
My four picks (of the above):

Track Rat - One particular cover tune
Crawdad/JR#97 - Tribute (established artist)
JR#97 - Hard & Heavy (:D yeah!!! ;))
Some Dumbass - Cover another clinic member's song

(or should we do this another way...? Mike? Al?! :()

I think all of the ideas mention above were great. For me ,it was as much fun daydreaming about how I would do each one, than it will be to actually do them(1.5 was frustrating 4me).My votes...

-Unplugged
-Cover another Members
-Hard 'n Heavy

for my last I'd like to submit my own

-Drum Circle ,where members can collaborate to build a tibal type drum and percussion/vox/sound/anything that can create a rythm jam.

Great thread!!!:D

hehehehe... I was in a band that did that very thing live. All 5 guys would grab 2 sticks....the drummer would start, then we'd each pick a couple of skins each to hammer on. It always sounded Sooooo cool... right up until I came in (I always was added last)...the absolute record for HOW LONG CAN WE GO FROM THE TIME CHRIS STARTS UNTIL WE ALL FALL DOWN LAUGHING was about :15 seconds... lmao. It WAS fun, though.

BTW - Has anyone NOT seen "erichenryus'" pic in the cave? If you haven't, you should. Man, I thought you were a lot older...LOL. cute kid, too.

(sorry for the senseless interruption here -- I'll vote for anything. B.SABBATH...you know how to make a poll, right?...re: Crawdad's question earlier??)

i used to do a live drum circle (not to be confused with a drum circle jerk) with some friends that i shared a house with. we'd use the empty water cooler containers that we kept forgetting to leave outside for the water guy to pick up (those things have a nice deep tone).

Bi-Monthly Recording Challenge?

I can post a poll. Highest percentage vote getter is the next project. Sound OK?

I would like to let this thread run a few more days and see if there is any more input on specific challenges. Then, the poll goes up. Those polled will have to choose one, I think. Unless there is a way to do multiple votes in one poll.

For the May challenge, we can use the same list or add any new ideas.

Is it workin', or what? :D

Keep it goin'...Can't wait for the next challenge!:D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :p :p :p  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :p :p :p :p :p

Let's doo it!! :p :D

I just thought that what you'd said about leveling the playing field, giving a "multiple choice" of options would be a good idea... not sure we'd get enough "votes" to take the top 4 for that, tho. But, the best "one" is good :)

Now, this poll is going to take a while to "complete"... should you set a time limit to participate in the poll, before the decision is made? I mean... the "poll" thread will last forever (and will probably still be getting votes next January :D)

Participant--My thought was that if one category stuck out as a clear winner, we'd go with that, as that would be the preference of the BBS members. If we get three or four that are all about the same percentage, maybe a multiple choice would be in order.

I'm just trying to think of challenge topics that would be the most inclusive for the members here. From what I hear, just about everybody plays either guitar or keyboard and many sing. Most have access to drums or drum machines. That covers a lot of bases.

The other side of the coin is thinking up challenges that ARE challenges--things that make us stretch and learn something new. That was the reason behind my "one mic" idea. It would make us really work on mic placement to get the best results. I think a big attraction to the 1.5 idea was that it WAS a challenge. We all wanted to see if we could get it doen under the wire.

I had another idea, which would be somewhat maddening, but might really prompt some growth and creativity-- the project would be to do a recording using NO EFFECTS, like reverb, echo, chorus, EQ, limiting or compression! Only natural reverb would be allowed (singing in the shower, micing in an echoish garage or stucture, etc).

Yet another idea: no drums, no drum machines, samples, etc allowed. All drum sounds must be created with other sound sources. You'd be amazed what kind of stuff people might come up with. Just a few more ideas to throw out there.

Time limit for the poll? Ten days? At least for this first time? I mean, we can always do another one down the line. As an alternative, we could just have Voxvendor issue another challenge and see what happens! He hit a good one first time out!

I like both these ideas. I did a recording a few months ago using pots and pans and wooden spoons in stereo. It's good fun.
How about both of these ideas combined with the challenge of doing a cover with a partner? I think it could yield some interesting and maybe even please results. :)
