I absolutely hate the cheaper ibanez guitars. The woods is so bad these things have virtually no tone at all. It's not a strat, and not a paul either, but a middle way which totally doesn't work for me.
I'm guessing you don't like any cheap guitars then. You're completely right that the wood is horrible, but it's no worse than any other guitars in that price range and atleast the build quality is there. All cheap guitars kind of have that bland tone like you said, not a strat not a paul, lifeless and flat. Even the Epiphone Les Pauls don't sound like Les Pauls, and the Squire Strats don't sound like Strats. It's not Ibanez, cheap wood just lacks character.
But I still really liked one of the jetkings I played before... and some of the Artcores are pretty good.

I had one, kinda low bucks model. Love the neck and FB. I gave it to my son who is becoming a real shredder on it. He prefers it to my strat and hamer studio.

O yeah...I forgot to mention...I have a GA6CE classical w/ electronics which I picked up for $150 used. Unamp'd it sounds unremarkable, a little bland even. Plugged it comes alive. Incredible tone and sustain. I will soon be posting some tracks on Soundclick recorded using it. The neck is more like a LP than a typical classical guitar neck, which makes it way more playable than most.
It reminds me of an older Guild Classical, but w/ electronics.

I have an SZ 520. I love that thing to death. I played a lot of guitars while I was searching for it, but nothing even compared. Best part is, now they're selling for about a hundred dollars more than I payed for it a year a go.

i've played a few shitty ibanez guitars in my day

not a lot, but a few

i used to have a 1978 artist series special edition, and that thing played/felt exactly like a buddy's les paul custom...it's a damn shame it weighed almost 20 pds.

yeah i've got a $200 Ibanez, had for years. I put in EMmmg 81 and 85 and it sounds great. sure there's other things I wouldn't mind doing but it suits my needs perfectly. And whoever said it was right I've been looking for a Gibson for about 2 years now, and haven't found one I like. I spend more time looking for guitars then I do buying a car.
