Because right now its one of the largest selling music of the yoooth!How many CD's has "1/2 a dollar" sold? Its also the easiest stuff to track in a home enviorment , 90% of it is by "wire" so maybe there are more hip hoppers giving it a go at home?

I love all the talk about "crap" music. The oldest trend in the music industry. The "crap" of today may be the classic of tomorrow. For every band or type of music that I think is "crap", there is a whole group of people that thinks the stuff that I like is the true "crap" out there. It's all perspective. As a studio owner, I do my best to maintain a very broad perspective. As a studio owner and engineer I deal with all sorts of "musicians". Some of them really let me down, some really surprise me. It's all about balance and perspective folks.

That being said, the original poster here certainly laid a real trap for both himself and others.

The Majors are only concerned with marketing a "product" by commercializing & hyping to the max, an "image" regardless of the false conceptions & furthering notions that most rapper's are un-edjumacated,thugged-out miscreants who will rob,rape & murder your great-great grandmother at the drop of the dime! Nope! Not true!
Numerous times I have witnessed intelligent & sophisticated rhyme-masters
flow poetic on subjects far removed from the "streets & 'hood" during auditions only to be told that though they possess lyrical talent & originality,
the need to "keep it real" by spitting flows about 9's,makin' cheddar($), Ho' @ da crib, @-da club & on 'da corner, etc is what sells! It's all about the $$$!
Believe me, most of the current crop of flow-masters ain't never held a BBgun
yet alone a Sm & Wes, Glock, Walther etc. One particular, well-known sophomore(?) rapper fr NY went out of his way to achieve "street cred" by getting caught speeding by the Po-Po & having a Glk-9 under his seat!!! This same individual was raised in a strict 2-parent home while finishing in the top 3rd in his senior yr of Hi-Skool! Again, it's all about image!
Think about it.... how well would Slash & Co made out w/o the make-up & costumes? Ozzie & Black Sab, though creating rock masterpieces, would be easily forgotten if not for the notoriety of their insane actions. These guys were geniuses! Same as Fitty Cents A&R & Publicity Machine selling the "Thug Imagery" of him being shot 156 times & stabbed 122 times along with being bitch-slapped by his mom's twice!!
I'm a luv'r of old-skool funk, jazz, R&B, blues,rock & EARLY,EARLY RAP! Most of the moo-zikal products of all genre's today is artistically bull-crap (for ex, Ashlee ne-1?) & is being rammed down the throats of the public! However, if you wanna' hear original,unhyped & talented mofo's, peep the "MP3 Forum" here or the "Listening Room" at Recording Project! Real musical jointz!

The Rock fan says "All rap/hip-hop songs is about bitches,bling & blood"; the Rap fan says "Rock is all screamin-@ss, what-da'-f#ck-r-they sayin'-noise"; The Blues fan tells Country music luv'rs "We started this flow of feelings, all you do is whine!" The Rhythm & Blues fan tells the Blue-sist "we took your own style and made it better "! The Country/Blue-Grass fan states "W/O us, Blues, R&B and Rock are all derivatives of our brand of music!" The Funk music fan exclaims "Our music is the penultimate as it combines all the heart & soul found in each style mentioned producing a musical way of life!"
The jazz fan, chillin' hard listening to each fan's proclamation simply states
"We are America's 1st and only original musical artform recognized the world over!"
Opinions are like @ssholes...nuttin' but sh#t ever comes out!

It's a really sad thing to have to admit. But I'm afraid you might be spot-on with that.

Perhaps with rap, the nimwit-to-skilled ratio is the same with anything else. But simply due to low startup costs and ease of entry, rap is inundating us with sheer numbers.

I mean compare the complexity involved with learning the piano (very large, expensive instrument, years of private lessons and practice) versus rapping (thug + microphone).

Obviously, something like the piano is going to have a built-in numbskull repelling factor. The mere fact that someone would have the drive and desire to continue with the practicing and lessons ... would naturally incline them towards the "non - chucklehead" faction. I mean if you truly were a dimwit, you'd get frustrated with the piano and give up in fairly short order (like I did long ago), right? In effect reducing the population of moron piano players.

Whereas, if you were a bad rapper, you could just keep on goin' and goin' theoretically ... as long as you had one person (likely your mom or girlfriend) teling you that you "sound good."

The only instrument / activity that seems to buck this trend is drums. I mean look at them; they take up a lot of space ... they're complex. They're a freakin' nightmare to set up and lug around. It's difficult as all hell to play them well, and a good kit can be expensive. Yet, for some odd reason ... half-wits tend to gravitate (better yet flock) to that instrument in alarming numbers. It is truly fascinating.

Not that I'm dissing rap, but IMHO commercial success does not equate to artistic quality these days (in fact, I'm inclined to believe that recently it is inversely proportional).
