Ed, clearly the optimal monitoring volume is 83db....not 85db.

(According to some guy in Mix magazine about 4 years ago.)

Thanks for bumping,

I spent about 2 hours at work reading this looking over my shoulder to see if my boss was coming lol. Great thread, I wish I saw this about a month ago when I did my first project. damn!

Time to remix,

Thanks again Ed,
Larry

monitor at 85 db. jesus i get tired of misinformation just to sound like they know what they are talking about. . psychoacoustics: how the ear and brain together perceive sound. fletcher-munson curve: humans here the flattest frequency response at 85 db. that's it. no ifs, ands or buts.

FEEL WITH YOUR EARS

WHAT 85 DB MY EARS DONT EVEN START BLEEDING TILL 98DB AND NOTHING HAPPENS IN MY BOWEL UNLESS I AM GETTING UP AROUND 110DB.FOR ME MIXING IS A WHOLE BODY EXPERIENCE

that was intedended for rocky outcrop. or as i will now call him: "rock-head".

I dont know shit hey

as a drummer of 20 years experience I think I have a fair idea of what shit is.heck its been dribbling out of my mouth for at least that long.It took me 15 years to learn to shave off my beard(when I say shave i realy mean weed wacker my shit encrusted folicules away from my cheeks)(both sets):)

Cant believe I didn't read this thread till today.

Thats why I ended up looking, and finding this site.

Nice info here Ed.
It's helped me get a grip on a few things I never bothered with before.

i totally agree with you man
jimi hendrix started out on a 2 track piece of shit , he didnt even know how to read notes !! let alone read ur future book ..
grrrrrrr
LEARN IT BY URSELF !!! DEVELOP UR EARS !!! MUSIC IS NOT A BOOK THING ITS AN EARS THING !!!

THIS A QUESTION FOR ED

I am very greatful for your advice but I have a request if you could please tell me what the db tolerance would be in your opinion to produce "releasable" tracks i.e. if I have a spike measuring a digital 4dB and the rest is hanging around say -12dB, within what range of eachother would be considered consitent in terms of the total song level?

You can't make a decision based on meter level.... you need to use your ears!

Perceived loudness determines the balance of track levels in a mix, NOT meter readings!

Thank you both. I will use both sources of information. I just want the consistency.I ussually go by my ears, which are in great condition all tests passed. But when I see spikes, or lower waveforms, I know that there is a frequency that I am not hearing change through whatever speakers I'm using at that point. I hear it later when i play it in other systems, and when I review my wave forms, I see it then I try to make everything level, and that is just seemingly impossible. so i kinda wanted a standard to follow and 6-8 dB margin puts me well within the margin. Thanks!

WOW
I really dont now what to say

now I lay down to sleep
pray to Ed my soul to keep...

Just the tips from sonusman alone fill up 13 pages!!!
