I will finally share some secrets about mixing!

YOu know, when you can't read everything you've missed since last checking this post in one sitting, it becomes too much.

There are many great comments from Ed, VOXVENDER and others in this post. Has anyone taken out all the "thank yous" and "bumps" and just got the meat anywhere?

Why? Too much info or you were doing it all wrong?? ;)

Both, but mostly all the info...

Näe, det var bara för mycket. Man känner sig för begränsad i vad man kan göra bara för att man inte är dataingengör.
(Its just too much, one feel too constricted in what is do-able if your not an computer-engineer, I said...)

Sweet freakin poop, this is the best thread/source of great recording tips I've ever stumbled upon, in 4 years of home recording.

I would not consider myself a "newbie" but I wouldn't consider myself a pro either..

Most of Ed's tips were very relevant to me.. That is the thing I found so inspiring. I am finishing the recording and getting on the final mixing of a solo metal effort, and the timing for this thread simply could not have been much better.. Obviously I wish I would have found it sooner, but anyway.

GalacticCelt, you deserve a pat on the back for that bump.. I was like damn where the heck did this come from?

Methinks I will be compiling all the nuggets I've read here, filtering out the rest, and using this newfound knowledge to rework my mixes from the ground up..

I guess you could say I am as guilty as the next guy of both the loudness and "sounding like the joneses" issues you have covered.. To me sounding similar (recordingwise) to a particular band I am fond of is like my holy grail.. Hopefully having the knowledge to correct many of my mistakes along the way now will help me in coming closer to achieving this. If not I am at least optimistic that my final results will sound just as good, even if they're substantially different overall from said band. I do feel my style and gear at my disposal are all the right kind to even attempt it.

In metal you just don't hear too many good solo projects, even ones done by so-called "bigshots".. I recently read a review of a solo effort done by Nick Menza, formerly of Megadeth, in BW&BK magazine. They really didn't spare the rod in exposing its weaknesses.. And after reading all of them I thought damn, here I am, a virtual "nobody" in the industry, accomplishing stuff that is probably 10x better both musically and soundwise.. I feel Sonusman's advice here will kick my stuff up an extra few notches on top of that.. That's the kind of shit that I am sure makes these posts worth doing, I mean all this "God" stuff is ridiculous and you've heard plenty of thank you's but I hope reading this one will be as fresh to you as the first..

i dont know if anyone has commented on these things or not:

1. dont turn the monitors up to loud, cause yes you can get a better overall perspective, but just like having it to quiet, having it too loud can cause problems.

using teh fletcher munson (spelling?) theory, not all frequencies are equally represented in their truest form at all volumes... when turning up the volume, you are giving an equal/porportionate amount of power to all frequencies... but it takes more power to power both extremese of lows and highs... so as a result the midrange would be accented... if the original freq resp. would look like a straight line such as _ the same freq. resp. line would begin to look like ^ (lower bass and highs, higher mids). so turning them up to loud would cuase different frequences to come out...

2. a lot of instruments have kind of a twin. i dunno, examples: bass drum and bass guitar , snare drum and guitar.

both can occupy same frequencies, and this could cause problems in mixing... one ting i llike to do to seperate the two is find a pair of instruments that act as twins. and then say you decide yiou want to raise 1khz on the snare. then cut that same frequencie on the guitar... this will seprate the two, cause by raising teh snare freq at 1khz, you are basically cutting other freqeuncies, and by cutting the guitar at 1 khz, you are raising other frequencies, this will help in sepearting conflicting "twins".

"Sound" is like a Gorrila and "Volume" is like a Road Lizzard.
Good Post Ed.

It lives!

Figured it deserved to be bumped again. It was my first reading of it (took an hour :p ). Most of the info is from sonusman (Ed) first three or four posts.

Thanks for the valuable information Ed. Could you go into some brief detail about the type of equipment you recommend to achieve a quality sound using these techniques. Would these techniques achieve good results even on midrange equipment? If you would comment on specific equipment please make price a consideration but not the focal point of your recommendation.

Thanks
David

I disagree with this completely...

Keyboard bass parts are a waste of time unless you are doing Madonna sounding music. Get a real bass to work with and a nice DI box and decent pre-amp to record the bass with.

not one of these songs was recorded with a real bass player, not cause I wanted it that way, but because good musicians & bass players for that matter are hard to find up here in Vermont.
