i tried singing into a computer mic and got nothing but pops. if i moved more than 6-8 inches away, the mic did'nt pickup my voice real well.

the mic picked up the whole room, it was'nt very directional.

the amount of detail i wanted could'nt be picked up with a computer mic. the highs and lows just were'nt there.

the computer mic was noisy. the mic wire was about as big around as a piece of yarn so i'm sure that had something to do with it.

i did record some half decent sounding overdriven guitar stuff with it though.

The sound quality of the recording is only part of the equation. If the songs and/or performances are good, many folks will look past sonic imperfections. There's nothing wrong with using what you have to make music. There's also nothing wrong with wanting to make your recordings sound better.

from a professional stand point, everything is wrong with it. a computer mic is obviously not going to give you an accurate frequency response, its going to be noisy, its not going to be very sensitive, and well, from that pro standpoint theres not much that is good about it. From my own personal standpoint, nothing is wrong with it. Most people arent going to decide whether or not they will buy an album based on recording quality (usually). The music is always most important. My friend recorded an absolutely amazing album using nothing but a computer mic and fruity loops. i say rock on.

That you were able to pull that off with a computer mic is impressive, and bodes well for your future as a recordist. But you pulled it off in spite of using a crappy mic, and you'll make better recordings with better mics. I love it when people just do it with whatever gear they have, while others are collecting nameplates and not really making music. Keep the great attitude, and buy some real mics.

Check out the Todd Rundgren track "Jerk" from his CD "One Long Year." He did that on a laptop with some loops and a cheap PC mic.

Well I could probably record a cd with the carbon mic from a 1950s telephone and a dictaphone and get a couple of hundred fans, friends and family to buy a copy - they're kind of supportive that way. The difference here is that I would never be complacent enough to think anyone would ever listen to it
