i wanted to know what APOGEE 16X AD/DA converter would do. for my digi 002. someone told me to purchase it together with my digi002. just wanted to know.
Well I record about 9 tracks.
I still don't understand when you say it'll add 16 channels of conversion. You mean for instance protools 24 tracks, you get 16 more tracks? Which will give you 40 tracks total?
Your Digi002 has 10 channels of inouts in digital format that it can accept. 8 of these are on the ADAT optical input, and 2 are on the s/pdif input. This brings your total input count to 18. The advantage of an outboard converter like the Apogee is that it allows you to use the good converters in the Apogee rather than the mediocre (or average) converters in the Digi 002.
This means that you will have a better conversion when using the signal chain through the Apogee. It also however means you will have to use outboard preamps to get the signal to the proper level for the converters. I would also look at something besides the AD16x and the DA16x. These each offer more channels than you would be able to use with a Digi002 rig. As a result you are paying for features that most likely will not and can not use. Maybe look into an Apogee Rosetta 800 (8 channels AD and DA) and a Rosetta 200 in addition if you feel you also need or want to use the additional 2 channels on the s/pdif port. You may also want to look into other brands if the price looks too discouraging to you.
Thanks for the response. Honestly speaking I don't need too many inputs right. Cus I'm a hip hop musician I dont use any instruments. Just vocals you know? So its not really necessary right.
Then, as suggested above, you could go with the Rosetta and a get a stereo pair of nice convertors and bypass the mediocre OO2 convertors. It's what I'd do (bypass the convertors).
