can i buy a drum set for under 300 bucks and get a decent sound?

yep....but it takes tlc. i have a "star" (tama before it was tama) and an old pearl jazz kit.... the star cost a grand total of $20 aus, and the old pearl was $250 aus they are both awesome... the thing is the wood has aged nicelyand that is the most important thing...don't buy a new cheapo kit, you will never get a good sound....these two kits both date back to the seventies...all i have to do to them is fix up the hardware, tighten a few loose screws and put some nice heads on em.... i haven't recorded the star yet because it is as yet unfinished, but i have recorded the pearl, and it sounds lovely. if you do get an old kit, don't forget to go over it with a screw driver and tighten any loose screws. $300 u.s. will go a long way in putting together a great sounding kit...you just gotta keep your eyes open

As long as you only care about sound, and not looks, yes you can probly do it. Look at ebay for single pieces, I couldnt afford a new set, so I collected good single parts. I got an awesome premier bass drum, and pedal for $50 on ebay, a snare for $50, a cool dw floor tom for $75, and a tama tom I mounted on a tall snare stand, for $25. I got some used cymbal stands and cymbals at the pawn shop. If you diddnt look and see that all my drums were different colors, it wouldnt matter. Actually it's kinda cool with a big ol red sparkly bass drum, and green and silver toms.

If you're wanting to record, what is the size of the room you will use?
IMHO....
You can wind up spending a ton of bucks on mods to a cheap set chasing a sound that a more substantial set would have provided out of the box.
