I had an amazing group of kids in the studio last week. They're called Lantic; the lead singer is 16 years old - and he's the oldest member of the group. First time in the studio, and they blew me away.

Two sets of brothers; Ryan (vocals - 16 years old) and his brother Josh (drums - 14 years old), Trey (guitar - 15 years old) and his brother Eric (bass - 14 years old).

It's here if you wanna give it a listen:

Wow. That was worth the listen.

The vocal reminds me of David Bowie. It sounds like they may have a future if they keep writing like that.

Holy crap, this would be good for a bunch of adults, but for kids of the ages you described, I'm honestly blown away. And your mix is awesome by the way. I can't really nitpick anything on it. I even like the slight pump you gave the mix at points.

Great job man, and I hope to see these kids touring in the near future. If I was the father of any of these kids and you played this for me, I would honestly start crying. hahaha

Love it. Musicianship is stellar! I think I might use this as a reference point for some of the projects I mix in the future. Thanks for sharing Harvey!

Thank you for the kind words; they loved everybody's comments. Now that my computer's working again, I can post the other four songs (which are also damn good), if anybody's interested in hearing more of their stuff. Actually, I guess I can just link them here and you can click on them if you want to:

*Note: That's actually Ryan singing in the middle section, not a sample.

Anyway, enjoy.

Can't they just be kids?
This suggests far too much time working on instruments and rehearsing when they should have been outside doing "stuff".
That said this is really good and, given their ages & the fact that Old Man Jackson isn't in control, fabulous!
Great bass tone!

Actually, we had to shift some days around to make room for their baseball games. They really are very passionate about their music - and sports.

They were here when Marc Columbo (Dallas Cowboys lineman) came in to do vocals for his group, Free Reign, and it was a mutual admiration society meeting. He was blown away by them.

WOW! This really is somethin' else! Instead of downloads are they going to make Cd's of the music you recorded? Sorry, i didn't have time to listen to them all yet. I might be willing to buy a copy from them. PM me if this is doable. Thanks.

Yeah, they plan to sell CD's.

This is really good for a bunch of kids, for sure. Kind of Old School early 90's sound al la School of Fish meets Jim Morrison. I bet these kids are "that band" that all the other kids are excited to see perform at the high school battle of the bands. Remember "that band"?:D

Might be me, but it seems like things get a little out of sync timing wise right at 1:42 with the drums and the delay guitar-coming right out of that drum roll...seems like it derails for a second and catches back up with itself around 1:47.

Also, the end just dies all of a sudden. Right after the last chorus, you get a quick tease of what could be a really cool "Rush like" Tom Sawyer break down jam out, and you get like one drum roll and one bass fill, by then I was ready for this cool thing that's about to happen, and it ends as quickly as it began. Maybe it was because it was getting past the 4 minute mark, but IMHO, I would have loved to have heard a few more bars (like 30 seconds longer) of the jam, and have it slowly fade out on top of all of it. Really showcase the musicianship, and end it out smoother.

Still...for a bunch of kids, good job.

As Billy Joel wrote: ""It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long. If you're gonna have a hit, you gotta make it fit. So they cut it down to 3:05."

If anyone remembers that tune.

Yup. you nailed it - and it did run longer, but the guitars went out of time so we decided to cut it short. It did "derail" in a few spots, but I made the decision to highlight their enthusiasm and energy rather than go for absolute perfection.

At some point, I'll do some "radio-friendly" edits and cut down on some of the long intros and middle section solos.

And I plan some "radio edits" to do just that.

It's just nice to see the young folk doing real music that isn't annoyingly artificially sweetened.

Nice stuff ...

Yeah, real good sound although a bit too long (says the guy whose songs are never under 5 mins.....:D). Some timing hitches here and there and that lead-guitar is a bit too much sometimes, but it still sounds very fresh. And considering their young age, they have a lot going for them. Nice!

Joey :)

Wow. They sound professional. Excellent band. Kinda'...INXS-ish. I really like the production for the most part. It sounds "human". Actual emotion and performance comes through. The only thing I don't like is the pumping. It's really over the top on every kick hit.
