I think my pc has a stuttering problem!?

hey all my pc keeps doing a weird thing all the time when im recording and playing back tracks.... it will work fine for a while then all of a sudden stops and sounds like a cd skipping it just stutters... Whats up could it be becasue i dont have a second hard drive just for my files or could it be because my ram is over worked (i only have 64mb) or is it something all together diferent?

I had a similar problem at a local radio station that I was doing some contract work for. They would be be recording just fine for a while and then the tracks would "skip". They didn't stutter as you describe, but they sounded like a vinyl record ( what are those ?) skipping.
I double their RAM to 256 Meg and defragmented the hard drive. Worked fine after that.
 
Hey yeah i defraged my hard drive but it still does it, but not as much(like once a session now, used to be every other play back) do you think more ram would cure this? it cost so much now.

Yes, more memory always helps. It actually dropped a little bit, down to $150 for 64MB Canadian $.

You could also make sure you don't have any background programs running, virus scanners. Hit control-Alt-Delete and end task everything there except explorer and systray. If this messes things up, one of the programs you end-tasked must be required somewhere.

Yep, you can NEVER have too much memory or disk space.
However, does this occur when you're just playing back without doing any additional recording ?
The reason I ask is that I wouldn't have expected a defrag alone to make that big of a difference. If you're getting a skip while just playing back, it may be a drive performance issue, in which case more RAM won't help much.
You could monitor your memory usage and see if the skips occur when it tops out. If it's not topping out when the skip occurs, you might try a caching disk controller to kick up your drive performance.
 
I'd bet you have an older technology hard disk, probably without the ATA/33 interface that I'd consider a minimum for this kind of work. Also, in my experience, the defrag that comes with Norton is far superior to the one that's free with Windows.

I only have 64 MB of RAM and I've never had a problem myself. I'd forget worrying about more RAM unless you're working with more than, say, 16 tracks on a regular basis.
 
I have a 6 month old gateway pII 350mhz...
This skipping happens when im recording and playing back.
 
hey i tryed the ctrl-alt-delete and shut down the stuff in the background and it worked like a charm.
thanks for all you're help.
