I'm using CW PA9 and I tried opening up some of my older songs earlier today and for some reason Cakewalk gave me this "cannot locate missing file......do you wish to locate it" message and it can't open up "some" of the wave files in my songs. Like for instance the AC guitar was there but not the electric and the back up vox were there but not the lead vox. I don't get it and I went to several other older songs and just about all of them did this same thing. Is Cakewalk just deleting my files or what? And my newer songs all play just fine. I have done NOTHING to the wave data folder (or anything) to make it mess up like this. So I don't know what it's doing. I tried re-booting and still the same thing, and I also tried kicking it, but that didn't work either. :D

Any help you can give would be mostly appreciated. :)

when it gives you the name of the file that it cannot locate, have you done a windows search of your "C:" drive looking for that file?
because i had the same problem (kind of...) and did the old "start,search,files/folders" routine and found them like that.
it was a pain in the ass method, but i got my songs back.

Tekker, Im dissallusioned. I thought you knew everything! Well I guess if your not perfect then theres some hope for me yet:D

TRY THIS!!

go to cakewalk projects/Audio data folder and it should be there!

Tekker,

Try using the CWAF tool. What this will do is to tell you what files are associated with your projects. With this you can then pick your projects that claim to be missing wave files and it will give you the actual name of the file as it should appear in the data folder. And with this information you can do a search on your system to see where your files might be.

Let me know if this helps.

Nope, nothing on the search....and I said yes when it asked me if I wanted to find the file and I tried looking through all the wave files to see if I could find them and they aren't there. :(

But luckily I might be able to pull "some" of it off my old hard drive that crashed, but I'll have to wait until my dad gets back on Monday, cause he's the "computer fixer" in the house, and my knowledge of computers pretty much stops after Cakewalk. :( (So you see shem none of us are perfect......) :D

So the CWAF tool shows you the file names then? And you did a search outside of the CWAF tool for the exact file name? Curious.

How about if you do a search for any file named *.wav or *.wave on any drive in your system to see where anything might be hiding with that file extension.

Otherwise, you may perhaps want to look into the methods at your disposal for backing up to a CDR or other media. This way if there is an issue, you know you have them.

i had a similar experiece about a year ago

now i try to make it a habit to convert my .wrk to a .bun and burn it to CD-R/W once i've got all the audio tracks recorded. also, if i shelve an unfinished project that has audio, i archive that as well.
the great thing is certain parts of my bass, guitar, & back vocals are looped, so i normally have enough room on a CD to archive the .bun, lyrics, 48/24 mix file, and 44.1/16 master file.

archive your files... CD R/W are cheap.

I'm not sure what the CWAF tool is? But when it told me that it could not find the files and asked if I wanted to find the files it brought up a list of all the wave files and those files weren't there. I did also try using the find in the startup menu and typed in the wave file names and nothing came up, so I think that they're gone. :(

But hopefully my dad will be able to get some of it off the old crashed hard drive (and as soon as it's off you can bet it's all going to a CD-R for safe keeping).

Tekker, CWAF is a free tool that is for finding files assocciated with a given project. You can get it from the downloads area of the CW site. It is a must have for any CW user. You can view offline from being in CW what files go with what projects. Get this tool if not to help you now then for the future.

Good luck getting your files.

Ok I downloaded it, and I have a few questions. Which files are the ones that are associated with the projects? Are "all" the wave files that it brings up in the window down below associated with the project that I have selected above? If so, then why are some of the files highlighted in grey and some aren't? When I select a wave file it highlights in grey the wrk. file it goes with, but when I select a wrk. file there are wave files that are not grey that I know goes with that wrk. file. (I hope that makes sense)

I also have several red colored wave files that say "missing", so are the missing files just clips that I have deleted from the project, but they're still there because I haven't deleted them from the hard drive yet?

Thanx,

Also what is the best way to put just one wrk. file and all of it's wave files onto a CD (besides going through and finding each individual wave file, cause that would take forever).

Hi Tekker,

If you save your project as a BUN file rather than a WRK file, it will contain all the data for your project including audio. Then you can simply store that one BUN file on CD.

Best,
Scott

Thanx Scott,
Yeah, I know about the bun files, but haven't tried them yet. So are there any drawbacks to using bun files? Is there absolutely no difference between the using bun files and using the separate wave files when editing (or soundwise)? Cuase I want to delete the songs off my HD (I ran outa space :() and I want to make sure that when I open the project back up that it'll be exactly the way that I left it (and I remember hearing some screwy things about the bun files but I can't really remember what they were.....I just remember hearing them).

Thanx,

Those issues you heard about were before the 9.03 patch as I am aware. After that I have heard nor had any problems with using .BUN files. The big advantage is that the next time you load your project, all the files will be in contiguous space on the drive, therefore increasing the streaming rate. You can get somewhat similar results by doing a compact audio function, tho saving as a .BUN does this process first anyway.

Have you recovered your files from the old drive yet?

Nope I haven't, my dad has hardly been home and he left again for the weekend. I asked him about it last week but he's just been in weird mood lately, so I don't know when he'll get to it.

I would try it myself cause I know how to pull them over once everthing is hooked up and working, but I remeber when he was pulling stuff off it before that sometimes it would work and others times it wouldn't and I don't have clue as to what he did to get it to work. But I'll be taking some computer classes (4 of them :D) in college, so hopefully I'll be able to do this stuff myself pretty soon, without having to wait for my dad to be in a good mood.
