As some of you many have noticed the past few months I have been going on and on about me overhalling my little Pent III 933mHz/Logic Audio platinum/Delta-66(Omni) DAW into a fully functioning project recording studio.

My room(s) will alwazs be shit as far as acoustics go. Let's just say that when I want to record a live drum set, I will be renting space in a studio for the drum tracks.

My main problem area has been which flippin' mixing desk to buy. I have battled it out in my head between an analog 24 channel Mackie 8 bus in conjunction with the Logic Control, and just bitting the bullet and getting a digital mixer like the Yamaha O2R 96 or the Mackie d8b.
The CHEAPEST I have been able to find a digital mixer that I liked was a "Scratched & Dent" reduced price version on American Musical Supply... and it was STILL $7,700. The Yamaha (which I think I would actually be happier with than the Mackie) is kicking my ass with a fat ass $8,900 price tag.
The way I have been seeing it is...
I could get a Mackie 24 channel 8 bus analog mixing console for around ($2,800) and then I could get the Logic Control + the Logic XT extention unit for ($1,750). This gives me 24 I/Os plus flawless (mouseless!!!) intergration with the software for a total of ($4,550).
That is ($3,150) less than the Mackie d8b and it is ($4,350) less than the Yamaha solution.

This post is really a cry for help in setting my head straight as to what is the best solution for me.

I am EXTREMELY interested in getting into soundtrack work i.e setting Audio to Video, editing digital video for television commercials, coorperate videos, videos that get played on airplanes etc etc. All of this tells me that surround sound and high quality DVD audio are going to be on the horizon for me in the coming years.

At the moment I know next to nothing about surround, recording audio to Dig. video. I am mostly (...ok only) concerning myself with recording my guitar, drum, bass, and vocal music at the moment. I have read tons of books and web sites about the coming of surround sound and DVD audio etc. But I do not know anyone, and there are no stores in Munich where I feel comfortable enough to just walk up to the guy and say...

"I am into recording just band type music at the moment, but will want to in the next year edit digital video together (using my Mac dual processor G4 1.25ghz and some editing software) and then compose, record, and mix the score for it in surround sound; all in high end DVD audio for independent films.... WHAT WILL I NEED???"

I know that most everyone will see the word surround sound and immediatly say... "GET YOURSELF A DIGITAL MIXER BOY!!!" But I want to know if a Mackie 24 channel 8 bus mixer can get the job done AT ALL??? I have been working with Logic Audio Platinum for 2 years now and have heard that my version 5 is tip-top for mixing in surround sound. If the software coupled with the Logic Control are a littele more cumbersome than a digital mixer, but can still get the job done, then I am prepared to save myself the ($4,000) and get the analog mixer and just live with the inconvienience until I am more financial secure.

Now, I went over to MOTU's website and saw that they have just released the 24I/O unit with the PCI-424 card. This to me is like a message from God saying... "There ya go boy. A 24 channel analog mixer with a 24 INPUT/OUTPUT AUDIO INTERFACE, just as pretty as you please."

Please help me with any advice you might have for someone in my situation.
