Hello to all,
I think I need some help. I purchased a MG166C-USB mixer hoping to do some recordings. I play in a string orchestra and was looking for a board that could record to my MacBook Pro and be used for live performances.

As for the recording, I want to be able to have a track per channel for post mixing.

To my surprise, the mixer only records over the Stereo out so all the channels are coming in over the same input.

The manual says it has 6 busses but I'm not sure how to set them up in the computer.

The mixer came with Cubase AI4 software.

Any help would be great. Thank you.

Well, Yamaha does a good job of hiding the fact that the USB connection only streams the stereo bus to the computer. It taps off the Recording In and Recording Out connections. I had to sift through the block diagrams to find it. So, if you're looking for a mixer that will send more than 2 channels to your computer, this is not the board.

If your requirements involve a mixer that streams multiple channels, you should look for a firewire mixer. If you don't need the mixer portion and just want to get multiple channels into your computer, then you can look for a firewire interface. Something along this line:

Ah, but you said live performance, so you need a firewire mixer. I have used a Phonic mixer before and thought it worked well. Something like this might be what you need:

Phonic Helix 18 Universal USB Firewire 14 Channel Mixer | Sam Ash Music 1-800-4-SAMASH

peace,

Well that sucks. I was hoping this Yamaha would turn out great. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you have a direct out per channel on the yamaha and an eight channel interface ..... that will fit the bill!

Most "mixers" do just that - mix multiple channels down to stereo output.
