What about a Studio Projects B3 for $159?

You get (3) patterns, and a fairly neutral sound. The omni would be interesting for an experiment with guitar cabs, since omni mode eliminates the proximity effect from close micing.

I plan on a dot-matched pair of SP B3 so I can use the Figure-8 pattern for stereo Blumlein technique, and in omni mode with a 3rd mic so I can tinker with the Decca Tree technique.

Gosh darn it why does there have to be so many mics to choose from? Secondly, huh... stereo Blumlein technique? Decca Tree technique? I don't know what the hell these are but they sure sound interesting.

I'm sure there are some good inexpensive mics out there like the B3 that will work just fine. I just don't have any experience with these condensors (yet).

bgavin - Don't mention the dots!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

Massimo - there's a good chance that whatever you get, you'll want something else/different in a few months' time, so get one of the really 'trusted' ones, such as the 4033, and you'll have a reference point when you come to buy more ....... and you *WILL* come to buy more:D

Thanks everybody, I appreciate your help.

I know you can't learn about these mics untill you start buying some and seeing for yourself. It's funny how you read something great about a mic in one thread and then read someone trashing it in another.

Someone brought up the SP B3 I like the idea of the multiple patterns. I'm thinking why not go for the SP C3 it's a bit higher end with the multiple patterns as well. But just how good are these mics, ah that's the question...

The more expensive C3 is reputed to have a much hotter high end than the B3. Some describe it as shrill. I've read comments from the bigger players with cooler heads, that the B3 is more neutral, not as bright as the C3, and an all around good deal for the price point.

I want a pair specifically for Omni and Figure-8 (Blumlein) modes.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah the B3 seems like a good versatile mic. I kind of wanted an omni directional condenser as well. With the B3 you get all three patterns, that's a plus.

Over at ProRec, the SP line has gotten some good reviews:

(and they flame stuff from time to time, too.) Posters to their forum seem to like them, too.
